IEEE POWER ENGINEERING SOCIETY BANGALORE CHAPTER SECRETARY’s
REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2007
1. With 59 membership strength of the Society, the IEEE
Power Engineering Society Chapter was approved on 22nd March
2007 against the petition for formation of Chapter signed by 18
members with effect from
10th February, 2007.
2. In the pre-launch meeting of the Chapter, held on
02.04.2007 attended by 9 active volunteers the interim chair
Mr.K.Ramakrishna requested Section chair, Dr.A.K.Tripathi to
nominate the EXECUTIVE Committee members wherein the following
office bearers were nominated to run IEEE PES Bangalore Chapter.

3. Inauguration of the IEEE PES chapter was held on 11th
April 2007 attended by 31 IEEE members and a few guests. Shri
V.K.Agrawal, Vice Chair of the Chapter welcomed the gathering.
After inaugurating the event through lighting the lamp by
dignitaries, the members approved the office bearers nomination
to the Chapter. In his key note address, the Chief Guest Shri
H.L.Bajaj, Member (Tech), Appellate Tribunal Electricity GOI and
former IEEE R1O Director, congratulated the office bearers and
emphasized that to sustain competition in developing country
like India, IEEE professional activities especially the PES
would definitely help to achieve the goals. Prof. H.P.Kincha,
Chairman Electrical Science Division, IISc Bangalore & past
chair IEEE Bangalore Section and past EXECOM member R10
delivered presidential address. Dr.A.K.Tripathy Section Chair
and Shri D.G.Sohony Chapter Chair also addressed the gathering.
Shri K.Ramakrishna, Chapter Secretary gave a brief of
activities planned in the chapter for the year 2007. Dr.Rambabu
Adapa of ERRI also a DL of PES shared his experience as
Treasurer of the Santaclara PES chapter and gave a technical
talk on “Enhancing Transmission Capacity” on the occasion. Shri
M.M.Babu Narayanan, Treasurer presented vote of thanks.
4. The second technical talk was arranged on
25/5/2007
on “A Reliable Means to Mitigate effects of Resonance occurring
in Power Systems” by Mr.K.S.Murthy, Senior Member of IEEE which
was attended by more than 36 technocrats.
5. PES Chapter EXECOM meeting was held on 26/6/2007
attended by 12 members wherein the following four members were
co-opted by the EXECOM and assigned responsibilities.

6. A technical talk on “Wide Area Real Time Reliability
Monitoring and Visualisation Applications” was delivered by
Mr.Vikram S. Budhiraja, President Electric Power Group,
USA
on 4th July 2007 which was attended by about 50 engineers.
7. A technical talk was organized on 25/7/2007 on “A
Smarter Grid for improving System Reliability, Power Quality and
Asset Utilisation” delivered by Prof. Deepak Devan of Georgia
Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA which was attended by
about 80 participants.
A social meeting was also arranged over a dinner
with Prof. Deepak Devan at Hotel Atria on 25/7/2007 with some
Section/Chapter EXECOM members and Special invitees from IISc,
CPRI & CDAC.
8. A full day tutorial by Dr.Kalyan K.Sen during the DLT
was organized for the benefit of Power Engineering fraternity on
the topic “Advancement in FACTS TECHNOLOGY” on 2nd August 2007
attended by 83 participants.
9. The following twin tutorials were organized by
Bangalore Section on 6/9/2007 for which the PES Bangalore
Chapter was a co-sponsorer.
(a) “POWER QUALITY’ by Shri
M.Arunachalam of BHEL.
(b) “WIND Generators” by
Dr.T.Ranganathan of IISc.
10. The following 5 technical talks were co-sponsored by
PES Bangalore Chapter organized by Bangalore Section as a part
of INDICON 2007 International Conference held on 7/9/2007 &
8/9/2007.
(i) “Developments in HVDC” by
Dr.P.C.S.Krishnayya of Canada on
7/9/2007 total participants were 27 out of which 13 were
members.
(ii) “800 KV Transmission” by
Dr.A.K.Tripathy of CPRI on
8/9/2007 total participants were 27 out of which members were
18.
(iii) “Management of Southern Power
Grid” by V.K.Agrawal, GM, POWERGRID
(iv) “Open Access in Power
Transmission” by Shri K.Ramakrishna, DGM, POWERGRID
(v) “Real Time Digital Simulation”
by Mr.M.M.Babu Narayanan of CPRI.
11. An EXECOM meeting was arranged on the 3rd September,
2007 attended by six EXECOM members wherein it was
decided that Section Chair Dr.A.K.Tripathy would attend the PES
Chapter Chair’s meeting at
Beijing. Secretary appraised the EXECOM about the recent
tutorials and technical talk to be co-sponsored by PES Bangalore
Chapter as a part of INDICON 2007 organized by Bangalore
Section.
12. On 26.12.2007 the last EXECOM meeting of the year
2007 was organized which was attended by seven participants
wherein it was decided to institute an Award for outstanding
contribution in Power & Energy Sector carrying a cash prize of
Rs.5000/- with a certificate. Shri S.Ganesan would co-ordinate
the activities. It was also decided to launch the PES Bangalore
Chapter web site containing the basic information and link to
Section web site in 2007 itself.
13. The Bangalore Section EXECOM was great enough to
approve Rs.20,000 as seed money to the IEEE PES chapter,
Bangalore. To enable the money transactions, Treasurer Mr.Babu
Narayanan had opened a Bank Account with the State Bank of
India
at CPRI, Bangalore.
14. The Chapter aims at conducting in 2008 at least two
tech talks a month for the benefit of PES members and
Engineering fraternity at large.
15. A two day workshop on wind energy is also planned in
the first quarter of 2008 involving all the related Industry and
Academia.
