REPORT ON ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING

 The Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) of the IEEE Bangalore Section for the year 2003 was held on 14th February 2004 at Hotel Taj Residency, M.G.Road, Bangalore. The AGM was well attended by 135 members, several of them with their spouses and 5 invitees. The total attendance was about 215 including Student members. Prof. S.V.Sankaran, Chairman chaired the meeting. Mr. Rahul Garg, Vice Chair, GOLD did the compering for the event. A handout comprising the Agenda Notes of AGM 2003, Secretary‘s Report for the year 2003, Treasurer‘s Report for the year 2003, and Annual Activity Reports of SP Society, CCEM Chapter and GOLD Affinity Group, along with a compliment, were distributed to all the members who attended the meeting.

 Mr. K.Ramakrishna, Secretary informed the AGM that the IEEE Bangalore Section had lost their beloved EXECOM colleague Mr. Pradeep Kumar Madan on 8th November 2003. A minute’s silence was observed by the General Body in the memory of Mr. Pradeep Kumar Madan. Dr. Surendra Pal, Vice Chair welcomed the gathering and thanked the members for taking time out of their busy schedule to attend the AGM which was an important annual meeting of the Section.

 REPORT OF THE SECRETARY FOR THE YEAR 2003

Mr. K.Ramakrishna, Secretary presented the highlights of the various activities of the Section. He emphasized that the hike in membership fee has played a key role that brought down the membership growth especially for the Student members. He pointed out that the Section had been very active in the year 2003, conducting technical talks, workshops and symposiums on various topics of interest. Secretary mentioned that all the technical talks organized by the section had no registration fee and a few like the talks delivered by Mr. Martin Fowler and Prof. Mr. Ramu V.Sunkara had drawn attendance as high as 175 and above.

He highlighted the TENCON 2003, the Region 10 International conference which was conducted very successfully and drew a great response. The conference was organized by the IEEE Bangalore Section and co-sponsored by Region 10 and IISc. Various Committee Chairs, Co-Chairs, Section EXECOM and volunteers under the leadership of Prof. H.P.Khincha, General Chair had ensured that the Section and IEEE got a good name and fame through this conference. Secretary also informed the AGM that student activities including the Technical Colloquium at Hubli, organized by B.V.B.Engineering College Student Branch and Student Leadership Workshop at Bangalore, organized by the UVCE Student Branch were a great success. He highlighted the Awards won by the Section - Membership Growth Award from Region 10 consecutively for the 3rd year, Region 10 Distinguished Section Award for 2001, Outstanding Volunteer Award for 2002 received by Prof. K.Rajagopal from R10, the Outstanding Chapter Award received by ED/SSC Society from Headquarters and the R10 Student Paper Contest Award in the Undergraduate category received by the student Mr. Mukundan Venkataraman.

 Secretary also highlighted that Dr. Surendra Pal has brought laurels to the Section by getting elected as Fellow 2004 of IEEE and congratulated Dr. Pal for the same. He thanked the members, speakers and volunteers for the support rendered during the activities of the Section in 2003.

Reacting to the Secretary’s Report, Shri M.S.S.Murthy raised the question on the shortage of Associate Members and Life Members. Prof. S.V.Sankaran, Chairman of the Section clarified on the issue. Prof. Jagannath from RVCE suggested that the dues from students, if made collectively, the growth of student members will be enhanced. Other members in the AGM like Prof. Jagannath, Cdr. Narayanan and Shri K.S.S.Murthy raised the following membership issues:

 i) Why student membership is declining?

ii) Why is IEEE not reasonable in fixing a lower fee for student members?

iii) Section has to take initiative for elevation of Members to Sr. Members and Sr. Members to Fellows.

 Secretary informed that Prof. S.V.Sankaran, having been inducted into the Region10 Executive Committee and chairing the Membership Development activities at the Region level, will definitely work on the issues brought out and hopefully some results may be expected by next year.

Prof. K.Rajagopal proposed adoption of the Secretary’s Report and it was seconded by Cdr. Narayanan. The Secretary’s Report was adopted by the AGM.

 REPORT OF THE TREASURER FOR THE YEAR 2003

Wg. Cdr. H.R.Parthasarathy, Treasurer presented the section’s audited accounts for the year 2003 and highlighted on the accounts of the section as given in the financial statement. The report presented a healthy financial position of the Section with a growth of about 20% in contribution to the corpus of the Section. Treasurer highlighted the award of $1000 to Bangalore Section given by Region10 Director Dr. Jung Uck Seo in appreciation of the Section’s achievements and growth, to be spent towards student activities. Mr. K.S.N. Murthy proposed the financial report for adoption and Mr. M.S.S.Murthy seconded the same. The AGM thus adopted the financial report for the year 2003.

 SOCIETIES, CHAPTERS AND GOLD AFFINITY GROUP REPORTS

 Mr. V.Jayaram, Treasurer of the CCEM Chapter and Mr. Rahul Garg, Vice Chair of GOLD Affinity Group briefed about the activities conducted during the year 2003 and their plans for 2004. The Annual Activity Report from SP Chapter was circulated in the AGM. Secretary informed that the annual activity reports of the Society/Chapters/GOLD would be posted on the website of the section.

 REPORT ON STUDENT ACTIVITIES

 Mr. Raja Rao, Student Activities Chair informed AGM that five new Student Branches were approved during the year out of which 4 were inaugurated. Two student branches i.e. Bagalkot Engineering College and RVCE Student Branch were reactivated during the year. Chairman of Student Activities introduced the student office bearers present, to the AGM from various Student Branches of Karnataka. AGM was informed that the reports of the Student Branches would be posted on the website of the section.

 PRESENTATION OF STUDENT PAPER CONTEST AWARDS.

 Prof. A.Selvarajan distributed certificates and prizes to the prize winners of the B.R.V.Vardan Memorial Student Paper Contest 2003.

 FELICITATION TO FELLOW

 In honour of his achievement on getting elected as Fellow 2004, Dr. Surendra Pal was felicitated by the Section Chairman Prof. S.V.Sankaran by presenting him a silver plaque.

REPORT OF TENCON 2003

Prof. Lawrence Jenkins, General Co-chair briefed the AGM on the TENCON 2003 Conference, which was a great achievement for the Section. He also presented, on behalf of Prof. H.P.Khincha, the General Chair a cheque of Rs. 7 Lakhs to Section Chairman as initial returns from the TENCON Conference to the Section pending accounts finalisation. The Cheque was handed over to the Treasurer of the Section by Prof.S.V.Sankaran.

Mr. M.S.S.Murthy on behalf of the Section presented a silver plaque to the TENCON Committee in appreciation of their efforts for conducting the TENCON 2003 successfully.

ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FOR 2004

Prof. K.Rajagopal, Chairman of the Nominations Committee introduced the Slate for the Executive Committee for 2004. Prof. K.Rajagopal informed the General Body that in the absence of any other petitions, the Executive Committee 2004 was declared elected unanimously.

CHAIRMAN'S REMARKS

Prof. S.V.Sankaran briefed the AGM about the various events of 2003, especially the TENCON which had brought another feather to the Section’s cap. He thanked all the Past Chairmen, senior members and the Section EXECOM and volunteers for giving him full support during his tenure as Chairman of the Section. 

REMARKS BY THE INCOMING CHAIRMAN

 Dr. Surendra Pal thanked the members of the Nomination Committee for electing him as the Chairman for 2004. He expressed that he had been given the high task of maintaining the momentum built up over the previous years for the Section’s growth and activities. He sought the full help from the Section EXECOM and the General Body to make an eventful IEEE year of 2004.

 ANY OTHER MATTERS

 Secretary informed the AGM of the following:

i) The Section had started w.e.f. 2004 the Outstanding Volunteer Award carrying a cash prize of Rs.15,000/- for which nominations are welcome from the members of the Section.

ii) The Section also wishes to felicitate members of the Section who had published their works in IEEE journals/magazines or society transactions.

iii) He invited feedback from members and requested more members to become volunteers for the section’s activities.

 Wg. Cdr. H.R.Parthasarathy thanked all members and their spouses for attending the AGM. He specially thanked all the spouses for taking pains to attend the AGM. He thanked the officers, members, and volunteers for making AGM 2004 a grand success.
