EVENTS DURING QUARTER 2, 2004

Student Activities

Annual Tech Fests of IEEE Student Branches

Annual tech fests at the following IEEE Student Branches were conducted and attended by the EXECOM members of Bangalore Section. Financial assistance of Rs.10,000/- each was given as support money by the Section to the respective Student branches.

1.     3rd - 5th  April 2004 - SJCE, Mysore celebrated CYBERIA 2004. Section was represented by Wg. Cdr. H.R.Parthasarathy in the 9th Annual National Level Technical Fete of the Student Branch.

2.     5th April 2004 -SIT, Tumkur conducted IdEEEaS 2004. Prof. A.Selvarajan, Dr. T.Srinivas, Mr. S.Parameswaran and Mr.Hitesh Mehta represented the Section. State Level Students Technical Symposium, Programming Contest in 'C' and Technical quiz were conducted by the Student Branch

3.     16th - 17th  April 2004 - UVCE, Bangalore celebrated IMPETUS 2004. Shri K.Ramakrishna, Prof. S.Selvarajan and Wg.Cdr.H.R.Parthasarathy represented the Section. Annual national level technical fest "KAGADA" was organized by the student branch along with IT Quiz and mock Stock. Key Note address was delivered by Dr. K.Kasturirangan, Rajya Sabha Member.

4.     28th - 30th April 2004 - MIT, Manipal celebrated INTELLECT 2004. Section was represented. Prof. A. Selvarajan delivered a lecture on MEMS and Dr. T.Srinivas attended the National Level Student Paper Contest held on the occasion.

5.      6th - 8th May 2004 - NIE, Mysore conducted ANKURA 2004. A series of technical seminars and contests open to Engineering students all over the State and country were conducted.

6.     7th - 8th May 2004 - NAMIT, Nitte conducted PG Fest. Invited talks and a technical quiz were conducted along with the State level technical paper presentation sessions.

7.     10th - 11th May 2004 - MSRIT, Bangalore conducted AVISHKAR 2004. Section was represented by Wg. Cdr. H.R.Parthasarathy as the Guest of Honour for the inaugural function of the technofest on 10th.

8.      14th May 2004 - BVB College of Engineering, Hubli conducted MANTHAN 2004. Section was represented by Dr. T.Srinvias. A State level Technical paper contest was conducted.

9.      14th & 15th May 2004 - The Management of Sir MVIT, Bangalore conducted a national level symposium.

 

Second IEEE R10 Student Congress 2004

The Section has approved nominations of the following student members short listed by the Section for the 2nd IEEE R10 Student Congress 2004 held from 16th - 18th July 2004 at Hongkong.

1.       Mr. Nachiket Karajagi of IEEE Student Branch, UVCE, Bangalore.

2.       Miss. Aparna Hemadri of IEEE Student Branch, SIT, Tumkur.

3.         Mr. Pradeep Shankar of IEEE Student Branch, SIT, Tumkur.

Section supported first two students with partial financial support of Rs.12,500/- each towards their travel expenses for attending the Student Congress.

Formation of New Student Branches

The Headquarters has approved IEEE Student Branch at VVCE, Mysore on 8th June 2004.

 

Professional Activities

1.     75 engineering colleges under the Bangalore Section were identified for inclusion in REP (Reference list of educational program) of IEEE. The data have been collected and sent to Regional Education Activity Board by July end.

2.     Section got USD 500 for initiating tutorials activity in different part of the section on emerging technologies. Further grant may come once we send the report of first such program. The venue and topic of first tutorial is being under consideration and will be announced soon.

3.     Voila communications, Bangalore has been hired to promote IEEE Bangalore Section activities through local media. IEEE news are published in the local newspapers.

 

IEEE Electron Devices and Solid-State Circuits Society, Bangalore Chapter

The chapter along with National Semiconductor, India conducted a 5-hour seminar on 17th May. The topic was “Art of Analog Electronics” presented by Mr. Bob Pease, National Semiconductor, USA. This event received a phenomenal response with more than 200 attendees. Bob’s lively presentation ensured that audience stayed through the event. The topics covered included amplifiers, power management applications, linear regulators and data converters. The audience appreciated the issues discussed in the practical implementation of the circuits.

The chapter co-sponsored a two week “VLSI Education Workshop” along with VLSI Society of India, and conducted at SJCE, Mysore from May 24th to June 5th . The workshop was specifically targeted towards the faculty members of engineering colleges engaged in postgraduate courses in VLSI.  The attendance was limited to about 35 so that a better interaction was possible. The workshop also had lab sessions to enable the attendees to get hands-on exposure to various design tools. Several leading experts from academia and industry presented the lectures. Some of the topics covered were physics of sub-micron MOS transistor, analog CMOS design, CAD tools for VLSI circuits, testing and verification, VLSI system architecture, filter design and reliability of IC’s.

Prof. Bhargab Bhattacharya, Indian Statistical Institute gave a seminar on “Energy-Aware Testing of VLSI Circuits”, on June 28th.  About 40 people from industry and academia attended this workshop.
