NEWS FROM THE SOCIETIES AND CHAPTERS
CPMT (Component, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology) Chapter
The CPMT society held 3 meetings in the last quarter. CS Premchandra of IME, Singapore delivered a talk on Merging MEMS and Wafer level packaging at IISc on March 29th. The talk highlighted the benefits of Wafer level packaging for MEMS application; he also briefly mentioned about Bio MEMS activity at the Institute of Micro Electronics. Number IISc students along with faculty and people from the industry attended the event. DR. Radhakrishnan of NanoRel presented at the CPMT meeting on May 6th at the Texas Instruments facility. He highlighted the need to build failure analysis capability while developing new processes. In the CPMT meeting at General Electric, Mr. Kunal Goray and Mr. Amit Shah pointed out the importance of lead free transition and its challenges. We all agreed the higher temperature for lead free solder needs to be addressed and a break through in under-fill technology is required. Mr. Somakumar provided a brief over view of GE activities in India that includes material research.
The chapter launched its own web site and Mr. SLN Murthy of ECAD Technologies coordinated the web development. The web site is https://ewh.ieee.org/r10/bangalore/cpmt. CPMT and IISC worked diligently to launch a course on Micro Electronics Systems Packaging course for the benefit of the engineers. The introductory course covers rudimentary aspects of electrical, thermal and mechanical aspects along with reliability. The course is taught by both the academia and the Industry and provides enough knowledge to select a proper package. Prof. Khincha, IISc inaugurated the course along with Dr. Surendra Pal, Chairman, IEEE Bangalore section and Prof. Subbarayan of Purdue University and editor of IEEE Transactions on Advanced Packaging. This course is well received with nearly 25 participants from 10 companies.
1. Continue with the Microsystems packaging course at IISc
2. Hold 4 more meetings in 2005
3. Continue with the 4th EDAPS (Electrical Design of Advanced Packages and Systems) in Bangalore (Dec 13 & 14, 2005)
4. Plan on increasing the IEEE/CPMT membership

The
IEEE EDS/SSCS joint chapter organized several technical events during the
second quarter of 2005 that received excellent response from the technical
community.
Mr. Dick McCartney, Principal Display Technologist National Semiconductor,
U.S.A gave a talk on “Fundamentals of Liquid Crystal Display and
its application in TV” on June 20. About 50 people attended this talk.
This talk gave an overview of the electronics and theory of operation required
for an LCD TV panel. Dick also emphasized on the key electronic blocks
associated with LCD TV and discussed the special demands placed on LCDs in TV
applications.
Mr. Atiq Raza,
Chairman and CEO Raza Microelectronics Inc. "New Waves in Technology
Markets and the nature of Next Generation Silicon Architectures", on 28
June. About 70 people attended this talk.
The chapter co-sponsored a one week “VLSI Education
Workshop” along with VLSI Society of India, conducted at SJCE, Mysore from May
8th to May 13th. The workshop was specifically targeted
towards the faculty members of engineering colleges engaged in postgraduate
courses in VLSI. The attendance was
limited to about 50 so that a better interaction was possible. The workshop
also had lab sessions to enable the attendees to get hands on exposure to
various design tools. The lectures were presented by several leading experts
from academia and industry. Some of the topics covered were Analog CMOS design,
CAD tools for VLSI circuits, testing and verification, VLSI system
architecture, filter design, and reliability of IC’s.
The
Chapter continued mentoring the newly formed EDS-student chapter at SJCE,
Mysore and helped them in conducting a one-day workshop on “Recent Trends in
Semiconductor Technology” on May 7. In
this workshop, several members from the Bangalore chapter gave technical talks
on topics such as DSM design analysis, MEMS varactors, and History of
semiconductor devices. We are also helping this chapter to get exposure to research
institutions and semiconductor industries in Bangalore.
The
chapter proposes to conduct a few more technical talks and workshops in the
coming months. Details will be communicated to the section members when these
events are finalized.
