CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

Dear IEEE Bangalore Section Members,

Pooja, Dashera and Deepavali greetings to all of you in the IEEE Bangalore Section.

The last quarter was full of activities and achievements for the IEEE Bangalore Section. The section conducted an International Symposium on Microwaves (ISM 2004) from 1st to 3rd September 2004.  It was one of the major events conducted by the Section after TENCON 2003.   Shri. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO inaugurated the Symposium and an Exhibition on 1st September 2004.   The event was well attended and the technical contents were of high standard, which contributed to the grand success of the event. There were two tutorials and four invited talks by leading personalities in the field of Microwaves and Antennas.  In all about 60 papers were presented in two parallel sessions, covering the various topics in Microwaves. Along with the Symposium an Exhibition (iMEC 2004) was also arranged by the M/s. Copex Organisers Pvt. Ltd, the sponsorer of ISM 2004. Prof. A. Selvarajan was the General-Chair, and Shri. H. Ramakrishna (former Executive Director, CRL, BEL) successfully shouldered the responsibility of Technical-Chair along with Shri. D. Rajagopal (LRDE).  Shri. D. Rajagopal also took care of logistics and other related arrangements.  IETE Bangalore Section Chairman and the Executive members were kind enough to allow us to use their premises, address and other facilities for making the pre-Symposium arrangements.  I wish to thank them and also the various Committee members, individuals, volunteers and M/s. Copex Ltd for making the event a grand success, within an extremely short period of time.   The event was also co-sponsored by IETE, iMAP and IEE Bangalore Chapters.  On behalf of IEEE Bangalore Section I wish to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to them.  I hope in future we will have many more collaborative programs like this.

The Section sponsored two students for the IEEE Student Congress at Hong Kong.  The students gave an excellent account of themselves and the student activities of the Bangalore Section.  Two new student branches were formed at VVCE, Mysore and St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Mangalore.  As part of M.I.T Student Branch’s technical fest, a Tutorial on  “Network Security” by faculty from Intel was arranged on 25th September 2004.  During this quarter one of the Members has been elevated to Senior Membership. A new society on Circuits and Systems has been formed, and is headed by Dr. Anand Mohan.   Our student, professional, technical, membership development and e-Newsletter Chairs and GOLD Section are putting their best efforts in their respective areas to give a larger boost to their activities.  Due to the sincere efforts of Mr. Hitesh Mehta (Professional Activity) the Section activities received a substantial coverage in the press.  Wg. Cdr. Parthasarathy attended IEEE India Council meeting and appraised IC on section’s activities and the EXECOM views on many critical issues.   In the coming months we have our Annual Technical Symposium and Student Paper Contest, which is being organized by Dr.T.Srinivas (Technical Activities Chair).  We also have a distinguished lecture under DLT program by Prof. Kalyan Sen, USA, on 14th October 2004.

I wish to extend a warm invitation to all the Members to take maximum part in IEEE Bangalore Section’s activities.

I wish the IEEE Bangalore Section fraternity a very happy and prosperous festival season ahead.

With Best Wishes,

Dr. S. PAL, FIEEE

Chairman, IEEE Bangalore Section
