REPORT ON ISM 04

The last couple of decades saw significant increase in the utilization of the microwave spectrum with the telecommunications industry successfully commercializing newer and newer systems operating at higher and higher microwave frequencies. Realizing the importance and significance of Microwaves at present, the IEEE Bangalore Section organized an International Symposium on Microwaves (ISM 04) at Bangalore, considered as the hub of RF activities in India, during 1-3 September 2004. The idea was to bring together national & international organizations and specialists who work in the areas of Microwave Components & Devices, Subsystems, Test & Measurements, Technology development and Applications. It was hoped that such a platform could bring about close cooperation and fruitful exchange of ideas and opportunities among professionals from R&D Laboratories, academy and industry. Concurrently an International Microwaves, Electronics and Communication Exhibition (IMEC 2004) were held at the same venue by M/S COPEX who also sponsored ISM 04. The Symposium was co-sponsored by other Professional bodies -  IETE Bangalore Centre , IEE (UK) Bangalore and IMAPS. This is an event of great importance in view of the re-emergence of RF and Microwaves to the center stage due to many exciting developments, foremost among them being mobile communication and computing.

The Symposium comprised of two tutorials and two days of paper presentations in 8 technical sessions (two in parallel).   The Symposium and Exhibition were inaugurated by Sri.G.Madhavan Nair, (Chairman ISRO) and the key-note speaker was Sri.K. U. Limaye, Director LRDE who spoke on Ultra-wideband Radars.

The topics and speakers for the tutorial were as follows: 1. “MMIC’s for Wireless Applications” Dr.Arokiaswamy Alphones of   Nanayang Technological University, Singapore and 2. EMI /EMC Aspects in Emerging Networks” Dr DC Pande, Scientist ‘G’ LRDE and Capt. TN Pranesha (Indian Navy). In all about 75 persons attended the tutorials.

The technical presentations comprised of four invited talks and 65 contributed papers. The range of topics included Antenna arrays and antenna elements, Transmitters & Sources, Active Devices, Receivers, Passive Devices, Microwave Systems and Modeling & Simulation. About 150 participants actively attended the technical sessions. The sessions were well received and the interaction between the presenters and participants was very intense and fruitful. There was also a panel discussion on Are We Losing Opportunities In Microwaves?” The panelists highlighted the need for mutual collaboration and sharing of ideas and available infrastructure to move ahead quickly if we are to compete in the international market.

As part of the ISM 04, a felicitation to selected Pioneers in Microwaves who have contributed immensely to the growth of Microwaves in the early days under trying circumstances was held during the inauguration. The chosen pioneers were Gitender S. Sanyal, Prof. Mrs. Rajeswari Chatterjee, Ramadas P Shenoy, Sri. N. L. Krishnan and Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sri S Krishnaswamy.

Over all the program attracted many active and committed professionals and the feedback was positive and appreciative.  In conclusion it can be stated that ISM 04 was a great success and promises much for the future events of this kind.
