An Overview of Computer Vision Research at Penn State"
Dr Kasturi Rangachar
Email: kasturi@cse.psu.edu
The lecture was held at Philips Software Centre. Dr Kasturi spoke about
the status of research in Computer Vision.
The focus was his work on Document Image Analysis, Visual System for
aircraft navigation and Video sequence analysis. He spoke about the research
done for Nynex company where very old telephone wiring drawings were
digitized and analysed. He also spoke about the work done for NASA on
obstacle avoidance (On ground and in the year) for aircraft navigation,
utilising computer vision techniques. His work on vision system for super
sonic
aircrafts was very interesting. He spoke about new developments in
IEEE computer Society such as online tutorials, certification exam, Digital
library
and enthused members to become volunteers of IEEE. His home page for

About the speaker Dr. Rangachar Kasturi is a professor of Computer Science
and Engineering and Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University.
He received his degrees in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University
(Ph.D., 1982 and M.S., 1980) and from Bangalore University, India (B.E.
1968).
Dr. Kasturi is an author of the textbook, Machine Vision, McGraw-Hill,
1995. He has also authored/edited the books Computer Vision: Principles
and Applications, Document Image Analysis, Image Analysis Applications,
and Graphics Recognition: Methods and Applications. He has directed many
projects
in document image analysis, image sequence analysis, and video indexing.
His earlier work in image restoration resulted in the design of many optimal
filters
for recovering images corrupted by signal-dependentfilm-grain noise.
Dr. Kasturi is serving as the Vice President, Publications of the IEEE
Computer Society.
Dr. Kasturi is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of IAPR. He received
the Penn State Engineering Society Outstanding Research Award in 1996 and
was elected to the Texas Tech Electrical Engineering Academy in 1997. He
is a Golden Core Member of the IEEE Computer Society and has received its
Meritorious Service Award and Certificates of Appreciation.
