Biography of the Speaker :
Jan P. H. van Santen is with the Centre for
Spoken Language Understanding,Computer Science & Electrical
Engineering Department, Oregon Health & Science University. He holds
a Ph.D. in Mathematical Psychology, from the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor. Dr van Santen's current responsibilities consist of
teaching, conducting research, and managing the Centre for Spoken
Language Understanding (CSLU) as well as the Computer Science &
Electrical Engineering (CSEE) department. His background includes
mathematical modelling of prosody, signal
processing, and computational linguistics. He has contributed a
number of quantitative models for various aspects of human behaviour,
motion perception, clinical judgement, language and speech. He is
currently the Director of CSLU and the Chair of the CSEE Department.
He is a reviewer for several international journals, conferences and
granting agencies in the areas of acoustics, optics, speech
processing, phonetics and mathematical psychology.
