Biography of the Speaker :
Richard W. Sproat is with the Beckman Institute,
the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).He also holds adjunct positions with the
Departments of Computer Science and Psychology. Dr Sproat holds a
Ph.D. in linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. Before joining UIUC, he was a member of the technical
staff at AT&T Bell Labs, and was one of the main people
responsible for the Bell Labs Multilingual TTS System. Later, he
was named a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Bell
Labs. He is also a visiting scientist at Google Labs and an
adjunct faculty member at Center for Spoken Language Understanding
at the Oregon Health and Science University. His research
interests include accent
prediction, articulatory phonetics, morphology, speech data
mining, text-to-scene conversion and TTS. He has chaired and
organized international conferences on speech and linguistics and
is a reviewer for several journals in related areas.
