Abstract: The growth of cellular systems is continuing at a rapid pace during 2003. Globally, many operators have started deploying third generation (3G) cellular systems i.e. Wideband CDMA (WCDMA), cdma2000, and EDGE. In India, the major wireless initiatives underway are the introduction of wireless local loop (WLL) systems based on cdma2000 and corDECT, and the launch of 2.5G services via GPRS (the packet data standard of GSM). The goal of this tutorial is to present an up-to-date technical overview of cellular and WLL technologies.

The tutorial will provide an overview of GSM/GPRS, and its evolution to 3G. Today, SMS is the main data application. Some interesting aspects of wireless data applications, such as multimedia messaging (MMS), will be discussed. With the rapid increase of voice and data traffic, the cellular operators will need to enhance the capacity of their networks. The ways of enhancing the performance and capacity of GSM systems will be mentioned. The integration of cellular systems with Wireless LAN (WLAN), which is a current area of interest since it combines the strengths of both systems, and will be introduced.

cdmaOne (IS-95) has been successfully deployed as a cellular standard in many countries, and is being evolved to cdma2000. The growth of subscribers and introduction of new applications has been aggressively pursued by cdma2000 operators. A technical overview of the cdma2000-based WLL (being deployed in India) will be presented. The basics of CDMA and the technical aspects of CDMA-based cellular systems will be introduced. Both voice and data services of cdma2000 will be covered. Some of the challenges in optimizing CDMA networks will be mentioned. The similarities and differences between cdma2000 and Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) system, which is the 3G evolution of GSM, will be mentioned.

The salient aspects of WLL systems and the corDECT WLL system will be discussed. corDECT is being successfully deployed in India and in over 10 countries around the world, as a cost-effective WLL solution. The key features of corDECT and its evolution to the next generation will be described.

Wireless technologies are poised for continued growth and deployment, particularly in India. The convergence of mobile telephony and the Internet - the mobile internet paradigm - is a reality. Against this backdrop, it is important to evaluate how wireless technologies can be harnessed in India in order to achieve the vision of 201million connections by 2010. The tutorial will also provide an India-centric perspective on state-of-the-art wireless/cellular technology and its evolution.
