Techfest '99

TECHFEST is IIT Bombay's annual technology festival. The entire concept of TECHFEST came into being a year ago, when a need was felt for a technology festival that would expose youth from all over India to state-of-the-art technology and ideas and also provide the industry a platform to interact with the technocrats of tomorrow. Techfest'99 is more than just a three-day festival. It is a common meeting ground between students, faculty and the practitioners of technology from all over the nation, where active exchange of ideas and ideologies will take place.

These are some of the events at TECHFEST'99 that IEEE-members like you would be interested in:

PRE-DEFINED (DESIGN)COMPETITIONS:

  1. The open Hardware contest…any hardware circuit that you may have built over the years now stands a chance to win this contest.
  2. WAP and win a prize at the INFOSYS Open Software Competition.
  3. The Cadbury's Design a cool dispenser contest…Make a cost efficient refrigerator to dispense out chocolates by the dozen.
  4. The i2 technology's Learn from the past contest…forecast the future from past data. Could be used for weather forecasting, stock markets, whatnot.
  5. Child's Play the fun design contest, where you design a toy for a given age group make it educational as well as fun.
  6. Bowled Over. Design a robot to gun down pins of a particular colour with marbles as bullets. But take care not to bowl down your opponent's pins.

ON-THE SPOT COMPETITIONS include a synchronous programming contest on the www, our Science and Tech Olympiad (the fundaes quiz), the teaching contest, the hacking contest, and infinity of debates, daily releases, quizzes, etc.

ElectronEx : THE ELECTRONICS EXHIBITION

This exhibition will bring together 22 of the top organisations, Indian and multinational, in the field of electronics. Varied sectors of electronics, such as communications, entertainment, computer peripherals and hardware, robotics, domestic applications, industrial applications, biomedical applications, research applications etc., will be covered, with representatives of each company giving audio-visual demos. explaining the ideas that went into the making of their product.

WORKSHOPS include MONEY TALKS (the stock market workshop),and BASICS OF FLIGHT (the aero-modelling workshop).

Also on the cards is a workshop giving fundaes on electronic components. What we plan is getting the participants to come up with a creative (beautiful?) circuit at the end of it all using their newly acquired knowledge.

OTHER EVENTS :

Dr. Roger Penrose of Oxford and Mr. Narayana Murthy (CMD, Infosys Technologies) have already agreed to speak at our LECTURE SERIES (which will use videoconferencing facility).

TECHNOHOLIX

Techfest after dark. Loads of hi-tech entertainment including virtual reality games (for the first time in India), net-games, sci-fi movies, game arcades…and for the first time, active use of smart cards at the technoholix site.
