- Why do chalks sometimes screech on the blackboard - (Professors usually
rub them at the wrong end !!, How would you feel if you were rubbed on a blackboard??) The
funda is that as the chalk is rubbed on the board a slip-and-stick phenomenon takes place
which sets the particles of the chalk in vibrations and so the sound.
- Why do loudspeakers hum - (They were bathroom singers in their last
incarnation !) Due to feedback.
- Optical fibres are found in nature, give an example - Polar bear fur,
rods and cones in the eye.
- Magnetic fields cannot do any work, then how does one magnet move towards/away
from another - This is a deep funda question and will be answered in the next
issue(i.e. I dont know the answer ), meanwhile keep thinking!
- How does one describe the radius of a black-hole - The event horizon
(Schwartz child radius) i.e. the distance from the centre of the hole where the escape
velocity is equal to that of light itself.
- How did the element Antimony get its name - Antimony >
monk killer . The story goes that some monk accidentally put a
stone of antimony in the rice cauldron while cooking and so all the monks died so.....
