• Why do chalks sometimes screech on the blackboard - (Professors usually rub them at the wrong end !!, How would you feel if you were rubbed on a blackboard??) The funda is that as the chalk is rubbed on the board a slip-and-stick phenomenon takes place which sets the particles of the chalk in vibrations and so the sound.
• Why do loudspeakers hum - (They were bathroom singers in their last incarnation !) Due to feedback.
• Optical fibres are found in nature, give an example - Polar bear fur, rods and cones in the eye.
• Magnetic fields cannot do any work, then how does one magnet move towards/away from another - This is a deep funda question and will be answered in the next issue(i.e. I don’t know the answer ), meanwhile keep thinking!
• How does one describe the radius of a black-hole - The event horizon (Schwartz child radius) i.e. the distance from the centre of the hole where the escape velocity is equal to that of light itself.
• How did the element Antimony get it’s name - Antimony —> ‘monk’ ‘killer’ . The story goes that some monk accidentally put a stone of antimony in the rice cauldron while cooking and so all the monks died so.....
• Which is the only stable element named after a real person - Too easy - find out from the periodic table !
• This guy took a patent for "socks for smelly feet" but he is better known to us for something else, who is it - J.L. Baird , the inventor of the television.
• The first U.S. space shuttle was initially named "Constitution" but the name was later changed. Why - The name was changed to ‘ENTERPRISE’ because NASA received a lot of requests for the name change.(The funda is that the STAR-TREK spaceship was so named)
• Which famous scientist used to measure the strength of electric current by touching the live wire and feeling the shock - (If ever there was a guy who qualifies to be called an electrical engineer !) Henry Cavendish
