Detail: Professor Renu Laskar, Professor Emerita, Mathematical sciences, Clemson University, USA is a renowned mathematician. She is the first female Indian to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA in the year 1962. Professor Laskar set new standards for women in mathematics and she ranks among the top women in discrete mathematics. She worked with legendary Mathematiciands such as Raj Chandra Bose and Paul Erdos. Her perseverance and determination to overcome the obstacles on her way to reach this stature of a mathematician from a middle class indian family of Bihar in those days is striking and an example. IEEE WIE, Kolkata chapter organized a half -a day program to felicitate Prof. Renu Laskar at Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, Rajabazar, Kolkata on December 11, 2014. About 160 students from class VII to X from two schools Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya and Santi Sangha Vidyayatan for Girls joined the program.
The program was devided in two halves. In the first half Prof. Renu Laskar was felicited by IEEE WIE member Prof.Nabanita Das. Another member Prof. Susmits Sur Koley shared the short biography of Prof. Laskar with the audience. Prof. Laskar then delivered a lecture on “Mathematics is fun”. She shared her experience with the worlds' greatest mathematician. She explained the history of graph theory, a topic in mathematics which everyone faces in their everyday life. In the second half an extempore speech competition was organized for the students. Three students of each school took part in the competition. Their speech were appreciated very well by the audience. The workshop was aimed for the 3rd year students of the Polytechnic colleges.35 students both men and women of Electrical Engineering stream of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray Polytechnic, Jadavpur attended the workshop. The students were tutored on the MATLAB basics, its usages & applications and also about Simulink. Dr.Bhaswati Goswami, member of IEEE WIE Kolkata Chapter and Faculty of IEE,JU has given an introduction with a power point presentation about MATLAB and Simulink. The participants were provided with hard copy documents beforehand so that they can follow the instructions for using MATLAB and Simulink. The documents can also be used for future consultations. They were asked to check each of the instructions in the computers provided to them in groups of two. In a total 17 computers were set to be used by them. The volunteers of the IEE Department, which included the M. Tech students and Research Scholars, assisted them. The students learned to use and apply the basic instructions, functions and even could do MATLAB programming (creating the .m files) on their own. From the feedback it seems they enjoyed the learning. They also showed interest on such program in futureThey were given a certificate of participation on the same at the end of the workshop on 26th evening. It was overwhelming to see them perform on their own at the end of the workshop, which gave an overall satisfaction to the volunteers as well as the learners. One-day outreach program on ENGLISH e-learning
Date: 27 July 2014
Venu: Pratyush, Barasat, West Bengal
Detail: ‘Pratyush’ as we all know is an organization which is taking care of the education and grooming of a large number of underprivileged boy and girls of varying age group from a particular locality. The organization also includes the parents of the kids in their activities so that the children can get a better environment at home too. This time the visit had a special motive and we had a very special guest with us. Prof. Upamanyu Madhow, a faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engg. University of California, Santa Barbara, is working on a project to democratize English education to people all over the world having little or no knowledge of the language. He is in the process of developing a software which has been named ‘GLENworld’ to provide simple and user friendly method to help the aspirants gain communicative knowledge of English language through pictures and audio and video demonstrations. The idea behind the trip was to get feedback from the kids of Pratyush, how the system worked and future provision for introducing such courses to such less privileged children. Prof. Madhow on his laptop demonstrated the software which was projected through a LCD projector. Obviously the response was very good and Prof. Madhow was more than satisfied by the quick grasping power of the children. A cultural program followed which was totally organized by the children themselves. The performance and the anchoring were flawless.
