Chair's Message
Dear Members,
IEEE Gujarat Section has been making its presence felt globally now. It has been acknowledged, too. We began this year by organizing Region 10 Meet 2008. We hosted
around 100 plus delegates and dignitaries including Region 10 Director Prof. Janina Mazierska, Region 10 Secretary Prof. Marzuki Bin Khalid, Region 10 Treasurer
Mr. Takatoshi Minami, IEEE 2008 President Dr. Lewis M Terman, IEEE 2008 President-Elect Dr. John Vig, President of IEEE Foundation Dr. Richard J Gowen. This
Meet would not have been possible without the one and only one Mr. Deepak Mathur who should be credited whole heartedly to bring this event here in Gujarat
for the first time and in India for the second time. Nobody would forget the active and sincere support he had been provided by two young ladies of IEEE Asia
Pacific office, namely, Ms. Fanny Su and Ms. Serena Dhing.
Gujarat Section has also bagged one project under IEEE New Initiative Program, which is considered to be a prestigious one. The title of the project is
"Conference Presentations online" whose initial tenure is of six months starting March 2008 (cf. http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/gujarat/new_initiative_project.html).
We have also been striving to outreach the locations and areas where IEEE has not impacted much. This has been planned to be done with help of IEEE India
Council under their project called National Distinguished Lecture Program (NDLP). We have to see how this project will affect visibility and membership
growth of IEEE in this section.
We all might be knowing that Gujarat Section is a small section as per the membership number is concerned. Of 23500 members of India Council, Gujarat's
contribution is 500 plus. But we are growing or at least we remain consistent when many fluctuate in holding members. 5% of our members are of Senior Member
grade, which is a bit higher than the average figure of India Council, that is 4%. We expect that this trend will improve on and on.
At Student Branch level our aim is to provide good quality technical programs. As per design we generate the requirement of the programs from the student
members themselves. After that volunteers do their job. Students are learning to organize, to manage, to short-out, to lead, to perform and to enjoy as a team.
This is the greatest achievement we see as a section.
Gujarat Section is looking forward to playing a role in the IEEE President's initiative of "Focus on India".
We hope that we have even brighter days ahead.
With regards
Anil Roy
Chair
