Summaries of Activities

2008

GOLD Activity

The GOLD Chapter has been active during this year. The new GOLD Chair Rafael Chaudhry has actively pursued to promote GOLD in the graduating classes. He has also supported the Membership Development Committee in attracting young graduates.

Recognised Educational Programmes (REPCOM)

No progress in this regard has been made this year.

Student Activities

Our Student Branches have been very active and progressive. Many new members were enrolled and retention level is good. They have been organising IEEE seminars in other teaching institutions, especially with IT and Computer related subjects, with positive results. One of the very active branch during the current year has been that of GC University Faisalabad. The members of the student branch participated in the national as well as international events, organized a number of technical talks and workshops, and conducted awareness and marketing campaign to successfully motivate students to join their student branch. In the Tech Fair around 350 students from 40 different universities participated. The Pakistan Student Congress was attended by 44 delegates from 14 universities. Amir Zahoor, Chair IEEE Student Branch Faisalabad got the IEEE outstanding leadership award for the year 2007.  He was also selected as the Section Student Representative of the Lahore Section.

E-mail and Newsletter Activities, Home Page

The Section Secretariat was not able to publish a Newsletter in the year 2008. However the Section tried to have an online Newsletter. The work on this activity is under way.

The Website for the Lahore Section was launched in August 2001. This website is being upgraded. A new version of the Lahore Section Website can be accessed at http://ewh.ieee.org/r10/lahore.

Awards

In the past the Section has given awards to the Best Volunteers as incentives for the outstanding work done by them for promoting the cause and function of the Section in particular, and the IEEE in general. The awards are normally beautiful plaques and certificates in case of students. This year to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the IEEE the Lahore Section is recognizing the contribution of its founding members.

Chapter Activities

PES/IAS Chapter -

Computer Society – The Computer Society held a seminar on “Computer Processing for Pakistani Languages” by Prof. Dr. Sarmad Hussain, from Centre for Research in Urdu Language Processing, FAST National University, Lahore., on 14-Jun-08 in UET Lahore. The Computer Society has planned a number of other activities for the year 2009.

Communication Society – The Communication Society held Second International Networking and Communication Conference in May 2008. Apart from that it arranged seminars in the area of congestion control and network security.

 

2007

2006

GOLD and WIE Chapters

  • GOLD chapter was not very active in 2006. The GOLD representative was sent to attend the GOLD congress held in Beijing in 2006.
  • The first chapter of WIE was established at NUCES Lahore campus during 2005. The second followed in the region under Islamabad Section. Lahore WIE chapter is active and it regularly holding activities for women. NUCES Lahore campus is the hub of all their activities.

Professional and Continuing Education Activity

  • This has indeed been the star activity for Lahore Section. Visiting faculty members and professionals from US, Canada, European Union and Australia were requested to deliver lectures. Thirteen (13) technical, professional and educational lectures were arranged with varying attendance.
  • Lahore Section also provided technical sponsorship to a two days international conference on Open Source Technologies (ICOST) organized by KICS, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in December 2006.

Student Activities

  • The main three student branches in Lahore Section, namely UET branch, NUCES branch and LUMS branch were very active in 2006. A collaborative event between the three branches was coordinated by NUCES student’s branch. It was the IEEE week. It spanned a week full of activities ranging from competitions, presentations, keynote speakers in the opening and closing sessions, electronics projects display and many more technical and professional activities.
  • LUMS branch has made its event of coding competition titled CodinGuru an annual event. This is a popular competition with teams from different institutions participating.
    UET branch has been most active in student’s technical competency development. They held workshops and educational lecture series for their members.
  • GCU branch in Faisalabad held a project competition besides organizing student competency development activities.

Awards

  • Annual awards were given during the annual general meeting in December 2006. The list of awardees are the following:
  • Volunteer of the year 2006: Dr Shafay Shamail
  • Student’s Branch of the year 2006: NUCES Lahore Branch
  • Lifetime Volunteer Award: Engr Abdul Aziz
  • All student branches officers were given certificates.
2005

Conferences and Workshops

  • INCC (International Networking & Communication Conference) 2004 --- the first conference held by a Lahore Section Communication Society chapter. 250 participants
  • INMIC (International Multi-topic Conference) 2004 --- this was an outstanding success with a record number of papers and with 22 foreign countries representation.
  • Workshop on Software Graphics: Software Graphics - A Necessity for Learning; Conducted by Mr. Qazi Hamza; hosted by IEEE LUMS Student Branch

  • Creating Winning E-Business Strategies: The Role of Trust by Prof. Dr. Fareena Sultan, Associate Professor, College of Business Administration, Northeastern University; hosted by IEEE Lahore Section, TiE, and CMER.

  • Strategies for Technology Development by Mr. Shahzad Imran Baqai, Director of Corporate Strategies, Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, CA; hosted by IEEE Lahore Section and TiE.

REPCOM

  • Got PEC (Pakistan Engineering Council) successfully registered with IEEE as the valid accreditation authority for engineering education in Pakistan.

Student Support

  • Sent a delegation of student Reps from UET, FAST & LUMS to the Student Congress 2004, Hong Kong.

 Student Activities

  • A Lahore Section team made it to the top 10 finalists of CSIDC (Computer Society International Design Competition) 2004 held at Washington DC.
  • The Codinguru Competition: 50 teams participated; hosted by IEEE LUMS Student Branch, the ComSoc Chapter  and the LUMS CS department.
  •  Enterprise Software Architecture: Tiered Architecture and JSPs by Mr. Umair Javed,   Associate Professor, College of Business Administration, Northeastern University; Hosted by IEEE LUMS Student Branch.
  •  SOFTEC 2004 was held by the Student Branch of NUCES- FAST. This well publicized and very successful event was well attended by professionals, students and the general public.  
  • R10 Student Congress, Hong Kong: This was attended by 4 representatives, including two girls, from IEEE Lahore Section student branches and provided the youngsters a very interesting regional networking experience.

GOLD

  • Reactivated.

Other

  • Lahore Section participated in the 1st R10 internet conference.

  • Outstanding Volunteer Award process devised and implemented.

Student Activities

  • Short courses arranged by the student branches on “Digital Signal Processing”, “C++”, “Java Programming”, “Networking”, “Software Engineering” etc.
  • Job Placement seminars were held at UET and FAST student branches.
  • Entrepreneurial Seminar arranged by FAST student branch jointly with IEEE Lahore Section and TiE (The Indus Entrepreneur, Lahore Chapter)

Establishment of Computer and Communication Societies

  • “Computer Society” has been established in Lahore Section (awaiting final approval).
  • “Communication Society” has also been in the establishment process.

Other

  • The Section was represented in Region 10 Committee Meeting by Chair, Region 10 Student Congress by Students and Section Congress by Chair.
