About Us

Madras Women in Engineering affinity group was started with the aim of bringing out a socio-economic upgradation of rural society through education, more particularly technical education. First starting with a very small number of two Affinity Group in the year 2007, within one year, the AG attained a Global recognition by receiving "Honorable Mention Award" for its outreach programmes. Now the Affinity Group is thriving with twelve active Affinity Group Branches. From school children to professionals the women are enthusiastically creating a vibrant network which is expanding every day. The outreach programmes of our AG has earned us a glorious name in the IEEE slate.

The Affinity Group considers its most significant accomplishment that it has been able to organize a variety of activities to address the various skills of students of school and college level and the benefits have been transferred to the rural societies to upgrade their quality of life. Within one year of its inception, the affinity group received the “Honourable Mention for the Affinity Group of the Year Award 2007” last year.

The First Region 10 Women in Engineering Congress was proposed and organised by Madras WIE. This provided the necessary initiative for the IEEE members all over R10 to start WIE affinity groups and the increase was by 50%. While the number of affinity groups in 2007 was 47,  it was 68 in 2008 and it is still increasing.

Sangamam Project – Technology Transfer to Rural Areas was launched during the R10 WIE congress and it has been adopted by three student branches under the section in 2008. Three villages were selected and the activities are planned targeting every group of people. Students are taught about Basics of Electronics and  project competitions are organized. Youth are trained in Vocational fields, Housewives are trained in Entrepreneurship, use of non conventional energy sources and other resources available locally and the overall society’s quality of life is improved. In the Sections Congress organized in Canada, the Chair of the Group was invited as a speaker on “Humanitarian Technology - Sangamam” and the project was recognized as one of its kind.

The strength of the AG is the capacity to excel itself in unexplored and unconventional areas. The STAR programme has evolved into a necessity for school children, since the Affinity Group members are targeting the rural schools with lack of faculty and relieving their burden through the presentations on subjects like Physics and Maths.
