- What is the IEEE (Eye-triple-E)?
The IEEE, a non-profit organization, is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The full name of the IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is referred to by the letters I-E-E-E and pronounced Eye-triple-E. Through its global membership, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics among others. Members rely on the IEEE as a source of technical and professional information, resources and services.
To foster an interest in the engineering profession, the IEEE also serves student members in colleges and universities around the world. Other important constituencies include prospective members and organizations that purchase IEEE products and participate in conferences or other IEEE programs.
As on Dec 31, 2006, the IEEE has:
- More than 370,000 members, including more than 80,000 students, in over 160 countries.
- 319 sections in ten geographic regions worldwide.
- 1676 chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests.
- more than 1,526 student branches at colleges and universities in 80 countries.
- 39 societies and 5 technical councils representing the wide range of technical interests.
- 132 transactions, journals and magazines.

- Tell me about the IEEE organizations in India
The IEEE is geographically made up of 10 Regions and 319 Sections world wide. India belongs to
Region 10 (Asia-Pacific area) and holds
IEEE India Council, which coordinates the inter-Sectional activities of the ten Sections and also to provide effective representation and support for the Sections in India. IEEE India Council holds ten Sections, namely, Bangalore, Bombay,
Calcutta, Delhi,
Gujarat,
Hyderabad, Kerala,
Kharagpur, Madras, and Uttar Pradesh
Section. IEEE Bombay Section is having two subsection viz.
Pune and
Madhya Pradesh.
In India, there are 358 IEEE Student Branches, with student membership ~ 16500 (as on December 31, 2006).

Please visit the IEEE HQ Homepage and you can apply on-line or you can download the application form (PDF). If you are a student you can use the online Student Membership Application.
- How much is IEEE membership?
Visit the Membership Dues and Society Fees page. You can join as many Technical Societies as you like. The Society membership and Journal/Transaction subscription involves additional fees.
- What kind of periodicals can I subscribe with the Society membership? How to subscribe?
There are now 39 IEEE Societies and each has a targeted technical interest. Visit the Customize Your Membership page, you can search the publication by Society. Also, you can overview more than 100 periodicals. If you hold IEEE membership and have an IEEE web account, you can at any time add Society membership, other membership options, or subscription to your membership.
- Tell me about the IEEE membership grades.
Please visit IEEE HQ site of Member Grade Elevation. IEEE recommends you to obtain the highest grade most suitable to your qualification. New members may be assigned either Associate or Member grade, depending on their educational, technical or professional qualifications. Grades may be elevated as one's qualification change with new educational or professional experience. You can apply online for elevation to higher grade, visit the site of Upgrade Your Membership. All IEEE members receive the same basic benefits and services, with the exception of the rights to vote and hold elected office, which are reserved for Members, Senior Members and Fellows.
