+**Seminar:** Microwave products using High Temperature Superconductors and new ceramics
 +
+**Speaker: Adj. Prof. Richard Taylor**, Queensland University of Technology,
 +
 +**Location:** Queensland University of Technology
 +
+**Abstract:** Dr Richard Taylor is Founder and a former Director and Chief Technical Officer of Microwave and Materials Designs Pty Ltd, now Mesaplexx Pty Ltd.  The company was formed in 2002 to exploit the unique properties of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) and other metamaterials to develop microwave products for mobile wireless systems.  Since HTS operates at temperatures below 90K, products incorporating HTS must include a cryogenic cooling system.
 +
+This development programme has required the formation of a multi-disciplinary team covering skills in materials analysis and synthesis, mathematical modelling, cryogenic packaging and testing, electrical engineering in a broad sense and a design-for-production ethos.
 +
+Learning the language of other related disciplines has been necessary to make the development team function and thrive. This has added advantages of injecting "outrageous" ideas into well established disciplines that might be temporarily destabilising, but ultimately may contribute to genuine innovations.
 +
+Dr Taylor will describe the growth of the multi-disciplinary team in the company and the back ground to the development of its unique microwave filters for mobile wireless telecommunications. The involvement of cross disciplinary ideas will also be discussed and the impact this has on the future of similar technology based enterprises.
 +
+**Speaker Biography:** Richard Taylor is the former Chief Technical Officer of Mesaplexx Pty Ltd and currently holds a fractional appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology. Richard started his career as a telecommunications engineer in the power industry in NZ. Prior to that, he obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Canterbury University in Christchurch, NZ, and a PhD from the University of Queensland in 2007. In the past 25 years, he has established two engineering businesses in Queensland, developing innovative telecommunications products.
