Title Structural Subband Decomposition: A New Concept in Digital Signal Processing
Speaker Prof. Sanjit K. Mitra, University of California, Santa Barbara, California, USA
Abstract Polyphase decomposition of a sequence was advanced to develop computationally efficient interpolators and decimators, and has also been used to design computationally efficient quadrature-mirror filter banks. The polyphase decomposition represents a sequence into a set of sub-sequences, called polyphase components. However, the polyphase components do not exhibit any spectral separation. In this presentation, we first review the concept of structural subband decomposition, generalization of the polyphase decomposition, which decomposes a sequence into a set of sub-sequences with some spectral separation that can be exploited advantageously in many digital signal processing applications. We then outline some of the applications of the structural subband decomposition, such as efficient design and implementation of FIR digital filters, development of computationally efficient decimators and interpolators, subband adaptive filtering, and fast computation of discrete transforms.
Biography Sanjit K. Mitra received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960 and 1962, respectively. He is presently with the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, as the Stephen and Etta Varra Professor. He has published over 700 papers in the areas of analog and digital signal processing, and image processing. He has also authored and co-authored twelve books, and holds five patents. Dr. Mitra is the recipient of the 1973 F. E. Terman Award and the 1985 AT&T Foundation Award of the American Society of Engineering Education, the 1989 Education Award, and the 2000 MacVan Valkenburg Society Award of the IEEE Circuits AND Systems Society, the Distinguished Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany in 1989, the 1996 Technical Achievement Award and the 2001 Society Award of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000, the McGraw-Hill/Jacob Millman Award of the IEEE Education Society in 2001, the 2002 Technical Achievement Award of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and the 2005 SPIE Technology Achievement Award of the International Soceity for Optical Engineers, the University Medal of the Slovak Technical University, Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2005, and the 2006 IEEE J. H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal. He is the co-recipient of the 2000 Blumlein-Browne-Willans Premium of the the Institution of Electrical Engineers (London) and the 2001 IEEE Transactions on Circuits AND Systems for Video Technology Best Paper Award. He has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from the Tampere University of Technology, Finland, the Technical University of Bucharest, Romania, and the Technical University of Iasi, Romania. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, an Academician of the Academy of Finland, and a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Academy of Engineering, Mexico. He is a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, India. He is a Fellow of the AAAS and SPIE.

Title How Powerful Understanding of Financial Planning Can Help You
Speaker Ms. Nurazlin A Majid, HSBC
Abstract

Biography A Financial Planner for eight years, with prior experience in the consumer research industry. Apart from advising clients on financial planning, which includes insurance and investment planning, she participated in working groups to improve marketing strategies for niche markets.

A strong believer in the importance of insurance, she took up her first insurance at 21. In her line of work, she meets different people from different walks of life, with different life challenges. Job satisfaction is high, especially when clients appreciate her advice and starts referring her to colleagues, family and friends. She has also appeared as a guest on one of Mediacorp Channel, in a program related to financial planning. She has also contributed comments on insurance matters for one of the major local newspapers.

She graduated from National University of Singapore, with a BBA degree. As part of continuing education, she has also attained the title of Associate Financial Planner, in 2002.

Title A Critical Insight into Investing Wisely and Profitably for the Long Haul
Speaker Mr. Edgar Lau, Fin-Exis Advisory Pte Ltd
Abstract A critical insight to investing wisely and profitably for the long haul. It’s been said that Napoleon won his battles in his tent. He did all the planning before the battles, so that all every contingency could be adequately covered. Investment planning is similar. You’ll never know exactly what will happen on the battlefield, but by being prepared, you can eliminate a lot of the uncertainties, and learn how to response to different scenarios optimally. If you plan to invest, invest in planning.
