2019 WIE Committee Chair's Message

Dear friends,

Welcome to IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), Singapore section website.

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is one of the largest international professional organizations dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests to a career in engineering. IEEE WIE Singapore section was set up in 2005. In the past decade, WIE Singapore, with the help and support of WIE members, have organized numerous events and activities to help women engineers and scientists in both their careers and family lives. Going forward, we will continue to engage IEEE members, in particular but not limited to women members, to work together and contribute to the prosperity and technical advancement of Singapore.

In 2015, Singapore government announced the ‘Smart Nation Initiative’ and aimed to become the world’s first smart nation by 2025. Five key domains have been identified to be of significant impact on the citizen and society, i.e., Transport; Home & environment; Business productivity; Health and enabled ageing; and Public sector services. In line with this, WIE Singapore had organized a technical talk “Smart Ideas, Smart Nation” and held one conference special session at IEEE TENCON 2016 ‐ Technologies for Smart nation at Marina Bay Sands Singapore last year. This year, WIE Singapore will continue to bring in interesting and meaningful events and activities to benefit both women and men in technical disciplines globally. One of the upcoming events is the special panel session in renowned international conference-GLOBECOM 2017 at Marina Bay Sand, Singapore in December 2017.

As one of the key initiatives, WIE Singapore lends strong supports to female engineers, scientists and students. We also work closely with other organizations e.g. Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES) and NTUC U Women’s Network etc., to encourage the next generation of women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We welcome various parties with the same aspiration and ideal to come together and contribute collectively towards our common goal.

WIE Singapore has been successful in our past social and technical events. We deeply appreciate the strong support from our enthusiastic members, participants as well as IEEE Singapore Section and IEEE R10 WIE. We look forward to another successful year to come and cannot wait to meeting you at our upcoming events.

You are always welcome to share your ideas with us. Do contact us at ieeewiesingapore@gmail.com if you need any further information.
