The IEEE organization that lobbies for the working U.S. IEEE member is the IEEE USA. They represent our interests to congress including a day on Capitol Hill in April, which I encourage all of our members to participate in. For more information see:

http://www.ieeeusa.org/

8.      IEEE Baltimore Section Centennial Celebration

The Baltimore Section is now forming plans for it’s Centennial Celebration Gala. The Section is planning a cocktail / dinner celebration to be held in late winter or early spring 2004. The dinner celebration event will feature distinguished guest speakers and recognize past Section and Chapter leaders and notable IEEE members from the Baltimore Section. But in order to properly plan for our 100-year celebration, the Section leadership needs your input. Please let us know if you and your spouse would like to attend such an event. Please reply by email to: c.nemarich@ieee.org

Watch future newsletters for updated information on our Centennial Celebration event.

9.      Volunteers.

The IEEE Baltimore section is entirely run by volunteers. We are seeking volunteers to work with the chapters, the affinity groups, the section and subsection. Get more out of your IEEE membership by participating in your professional society and networking with your fellow IEEE members. This is a way to learn management and leadership skills that will be valuable in your career. Please contact Jeff Friedhoffer or any of the chairs of the component organizations of the Baltimore Section. See:

http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r2/baltimore/officers.htm

10.  Robot Challenge.

See details on the Baltimore IEEE website.

11.  Manage Your Membership.

IEEE members can manage their membership online using an IEEE Web Account login. You will choose a username and password and it will become the secure mechanism that IEEE uses to identify you and the services you have subscribed to.

Once you obtain an IEEE Web Account, many services are available to you. These include: Updating your contact information, obtaining or updating an IEEE e-mail alias, and adding new societies or subscriptions. You may also choose to join the IEEE Standards Association or Women in Engineering.

If you are an existing member and would like to elevate your IEEE grade from Associate to Member or Member to Senior Member, please complete and submit the appropriate elevation applications:

http://www.ieee.org/portal/index.jsp?pageID=corp_level1&path=membership&file=manage.xml&xsl=genric.xsl

12.  IEEE Personal Email Alias.

The IEEE offers a free email alias name@ieee.org. This service offers virus scanning and will be offering a spam identification option. This alias allows you to change your ISP without having to send your email correspondents a change of email address. Jeff finds that he gets less spam at home than at work even though his email address is on the IEEE web site. We strongly recommend using this alias service.

For information on setting up your own personal email alias, see the following web site:

http://eleccomm.ieee.org/personal-aliases.shtml

13.  Employment.

With the current state of the economy and having a number of our members looking for a new job, we have an employment page on our web site:

http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r2/baltimore/employment_site.htm

Resumes are posted for as long as our members would like to have them posted. In addition we will have a help wanted page available for companies that are offering employment to our members. This service will be available for free until the employment picture turns around.

14.  H-1B Visa Program.

For information about the H-1B visa program, see the following web site:

http://www.ieeeusa.org/forum/issues/H1bvisa/index.html

This site provides the IEEE USA’s opinion on the H-1B visa program.
