1.             Note from the Editor

The IEEE Baltimore Section officers and volunteers wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. If interesting news comes our way this summer, we will share it with you in our monthly newsletter.

2.             Special Request for IEEE Members

The following is a special request for members of the IEEE.

“My name is Xavier Hadjadj and I reside in Princeton, NJ. My hobby consists in collecting special themed license plate such as engineering related organizational license plates from every US State depending on availability.

Since I am not a motorist registered in the State of Maryland, I understand that I may only be eligible to obtain an expired version of this license plate or a sample as opposed to valid MD license plate.

I would really enjoy receiving a Maryland IEEE license plate for my collection. In return, I am willing to pay for any shipping charge and other related expenses or even send you back a similar sample license plate from my State (New Jersey).

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Xavier Hadjadj

230 Hendrickson Drive

Princeton Junction,NJ 08550

thehadjadj@verizon.net”

3.             Electronics Wizard Needed (Rockville MD)

The following is an employment ad, which may benefit some of our members.

“Our little event production company needs a small fleet of devices built for use in movie special effects and production shows. Suit a young engineer looking for good pocket money, grad student, tech etc. Some devices need to be triggered by tilting and impact (the most urgent need), others are more sophisticated such as remote controls and gadgets that take 4 to 16 switched inputs and decide which event to trigger based on rules in software. Devices will be used heavily by our techs in the field and so need to be not just well designed but well-built, physically tough, water resistant, immune to things like reverse voltages and shorts, etc. We are a very small (but very successful in our field) business and we cannot afford a full-scale circus from an engineering company. Instead the CEO would much rather work with a qualified electronic engineer or tech student to develop these devices, which will replace a generation of older devices we have now. We have worked like this in the past with great success. We will pay you decently for your work; we want good value but do not expect it for free! CEO would like to meet anyone we engage prior to getting a final quote - we can show you current equipment and prototypes and answer your questions. We do not need everything at once, and we do know exactly what we want - CEO has good engineering familiarity. Fun is guaranteed, late nights probably too; our (very) small company is well known in its field and a great crew to work with.

Location: Rockville MD

It's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests.

Compensation: We will ask you for a quote and would prefer to meet beforehand.

5.             Continuing EE Education

We are re-running this request for interest in a continuing education program. This program will be in the format of seminars focused on a particular topic of interest. The seminars may run either during the week after work hours or possibly on Saturday. The idea for the program is described below.

Name of project: Continuing EE Education (“CEEE”)

Goal: A section-level program aimed at:

Updating the IEEE members on new developments in the EE field.

Familiarizing engineers with basic new tools, products and techniques as well as giving them the initial knowledge and skills to use them.

Inviting representatives from different vendors to present leading novel products.

Giving tutorials in new areas.

Helping IEEE fellow members become more competitive, especially in times of uncertain jobs, off-shoring and salary stagnation.

Facilitating networking.

Broadening the horizon of each IEEE member.

Fostering collaboration between members of different societies as well as generation of new ideas (“cross-pollination” element).

The program should be open to all IEEE members, including students. It is meant to be a cross-societies initiative, i.e. should not be limited to narrow topics serving the interests of a single chapter only. Emphasis should be placed on meeting with experienced experts from different fields. Critical comparisons between different solutions of EE problems are expected to be made, and trends should be discussed.

Potential topics of interest could include, but are not limited to:

Software tools:

Programming languages

Compilers

Real-Time Operating systems

Debuggers

Emulators

Hardware tools:

Novel electronic components

Single-Board Computers (SBC)

Embedded solutions

FPGAs

Printed circuit board design (schematics capture, layout)

Circuit simulation (PSPICE)

Portable devices

Signal and image processing (examples, tools, help)

Wireless devices:

Theory

Standards

Available OEM products

Trends

Internet-based methods and devices:

Standards

Available tools

Web Page Design

Contemporary design tools (like AutoCad and Solid Works)

Reliability and Compliance issues

We plan to invite qualified speakers from academia, industry and governmental institutions. The speakers will be professionals who can give first-hand information and share front-line experience on the technology, methods and tools being presented.

We plan to organize 2-4 meetings annually. Each meeting is planned to last for 2 hours or more. We could meet on weekdays, or on Saturdays.

Please send us your suggestions and preferences regarding topics, time and place of meetings, the name/acronym of the program etc.
