Diamond Stories

Engineering Outside the Box

Why engineers do 60 percent useless things? Find out why and how to be useful in innovation. Future competition depends on the ability to innovate and produce high value.

The presentation covers how to apply creativity to engineering specifications, design outside the box, and avoid useless work. A case history of a major U.S. corporation will be covered.

Dev Raheja, founder and president of Design for Competitiveness, Inc., is an international consultant and trainer in new product development. His clients include Harley-Davidson, Eaton, Intel, Boeing, IBM, Siemens and NASA. Previously, he held management positions at Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. and General Electric. He is an expert in design assurance, and is credited with turning around a major division of a large corporation, taking it from going out of business to achieving a number one market position.

Raheja served as adjunct professor at the University of Maryland for its graduate program in reliability engineering. He is chair of the IEEE Design for Reliability Committee and an author of the text Assurance Technologies Principles and Practices: A Product, Process and System Safety Perspective (2006).
