Mary Tobin has had a long career as an experimental scientist specializing in laser and semiconductor optoelectronics research and development. As a physicist with the Army Research Laboratory, her work led to the development of near millimeter wave laser sources (now called Terahertz). Her efforts evolved to research and development of nonlinear optical modulators and semiconductor quantum-well optoelectronic devices.
Dr. Tobin has served as chair of the Washington and Northern Virginia Chapter of the Photonics Society (formerly the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society) and as president of the National Capital Section of the Optical Society of America (NCSOSA). She is a Senior Member of IEEE and has published extensively in the optoelectronic research field.
She holds a Ph.D. in physics from the Catholic University of America and an M.S. in physics from the College of William and Mary.
