TEACHER IN-SERVICE PROGRAM (TISP)

For further information, contact Lonnie H. Baxley, Jr  lhbaxley@ieee.org  336-674-6538

IEEE and IBM have created a new Web site that combines information on engineering careers with interactive activities.  Intended for pre-university students, parents, teachers, school counselors, and the general public, TryEngineering.org  lets visitors explore how to prepare for an engineering career, ask experts engineering-related questions, play interactive games, and more.

Note: Some of initial TISP Lesson Plans were merged into www.TryEngineering.org in July 2006 (There are now 42 Lesson Plans available with more planned for later.)
You may access these 40+ Lesson Plans See Compiled List Here.
Our revised CNC Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) Brochure reflects this change. 9/25/07

DESIGN SQUAD is coming to PBS during National Engineers Week 2007. DESIGN SQUAD is a new television series that's part reality competition, all engineering, and major fun. Visit http://pbskidsgo.org/designsquad and watch a clip from the pilot, meet the cast, and learn how you can get involved in the outreach.

Everyday Edisons Everybody has a great idea that could change the way we work, the way we live or the way we play. Everyday Edisons documents the development process of 14 inventions and the parallel stories of the people who invented them as they are taken from a sketch on a napkin to a store shelf. www.everydayedisons.com/

Teaching Teachers a Smidgen of Engineering In 2006, the IEEE Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) expanded beyond the United States to Malaysia and South Africa, and this year the program has its sights set on Argentina, Kenya, and Peru. But before the volunteers can begin work, they need a little help themselves on how to inject engineering principles into lesson plans. Read on at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/4981/01405414

IEEE.tv  is an Internet broadcasting network made possible by the members of IEEE.  It has programs for general public and for IEEE members.  What's Out There: Careers for Electrical Engineers & Computer Scientists  -is an excellent video of a bird's-eye view of career possibilities in electrical and computer engineering.

The National Environmental Education & Training Foundation, which was chartered by Congress in 1990, sponsors ClassroomEarth.org, a free website that calls itself “the best of the best” collection of environmental education programs and resources for K-12 teachers, parents and students. The site helps educators, after-school programs and home-schooling parents find up-to-date information on the most successful, well-tested and effective national environmental education programs available today

New Technology Connections portal
Web Site Specializes in New Technologies Need to learn about a new technology quickly and don't want to waste time looking at less-than-authoritative Web sites or print sources? The IEEE's New Technology Connections portal may be just what you're looking for.

Ideas from IBM library
For nearly a century, people have looked to IBM to realize opportunities, to analyze developments and to tackle and overcome grand challenges. As a result, we've developed unique perspectives on how to change the way the world works. Here we present some of those Ideas from IBM.

The Global Educational Outreach (GEO) initiative uses new technology to provide outstanding Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) teaching material. It is a highly flexible medium enabling a wide range of different educational approaches to be explored and it is particularly useful for SET teachers who will find valuable downloadable teaching resource material created by the best science and technology experts and educators. A key aim is to catalyse the creation of a global network of participating sites catering to the local and global need for much improved SET education 2/26/08

The IEEE and its local Sections have a commitment to the enhancement of the level of technological literacy, science and mathematics among pre-college educators and ultimately their students. The IEEE Teacher In-Service Program was developed to provide effective outreach to teachers by IEEE Sections. We have created pre-defined lesson plans on science and engineering topics that can be presented to students with the help of local IEEE volunteers. Each lesson is tied to education standards, and includes teacher summaries, student worksheets, and activities.

Benefits for Educator

  • Increase the level of technological literacy in our local school district
  • Facilitate enhancements in science and technology curricula
  • Enable the exposure of pre-college students to engineering and science professions
  • Develop collaborative relationships with local engineers and scientists, and technology volunteers
  • Provide packaged lesson plans for hands-on science and technology topics, with volunteer assistance

Pre-Planned Lesson Plans

The Teacher In-Service Program provides the educator with pre-packaged lesson plans for a variety of science, mathematics, physics, and engineering topics, aimed at (depending on the lesson) elementary, middle-school and high school students (ages 8-18), available in both English and Spanish.

  • Electric Motors
  • Light Waves
  • Simple Machines
  • Robotics
  • Modeling
  • Electric Circuits
  • Electric Insulators and Conductors
  • Electric Components
  • Rotational Forces and Equilibrium
  • Measurements and Errors
  • Others

In general, most lessons are designed to be taught in one or two class periods. The objectives and activities within each plan are aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study, and science, technology, and mathematics standards as developed and adopted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Technology Education Association, National Science Teachers Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
