K-12 STEM Program

The Knoxville Chamber, Knox County Schools, and the Knoxville Section of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers have started a website to act as a clearinghouse to link science and engineering professionals with students and educators. The Knoxville Chamber has requested that local technical society members show their interest in pre-college STEM outreach activities by volunteering to help schools meet the challenge of graduating students with technology proficiency. IEEE ET Section to Sponsor First Lego League Teams

The Section is sponsoring First Lego League teams in 2009 at Farragut Middle School, Cedar Bluff Middle School, and Robertsville Middle School (Oak Ridge). The section is looking for members who would be interested in being mentors for middle school students. This effort is a K-12 outreach project in keeping with iEEE's Education Activities goals of encouraging pre-college kids interest in pursuing science and engineering careers. If you are interested, please complete the Lego League Questionnaire. The release date for the 2009 challenge is Sept. 3rd. The Tennessee State cometition is in early December.

UT Student Branch Excels at SoutheastCon 2009

The UT IEEE Robotics Team placed 2nd out of 44 teams entered in the SoutheastCon 2009 Robotics Competition held in Atlanta March 6-8. The objective of the competition was to construct an autonomous robot to collect and sort aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles. Students worked on the robot both as part of senior design and as an extracurricular activity.This is the first time that UT has placed in several years. UT's robotics team was just restarted this past year after a multi-year hiatus. The final scores are available at: http://new.gt-ieee.org/scores.php. Pellissippi State placed 11th, which is outstanding since all the other participating teams except 1 are from 4 year colleges.

IEEE To Celebrate 125th Anniversary

IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference to be held in Knoxville in 2010

IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society will sponsor the "2010 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (2010 NSS/MIC) ". This conference will be held October 28 - November 7, 2010 in Knoxville. NPS Symposiums
