How to Subscribe to RSS Feeds

RSS feeds are simply special types of web pages that websites use to notify visitors when something new has been posted on their website. To "subscribe" to a site feed you need a feed reader. Many Internet browsers and email clients provide this function. Look for the RSS feed link on a web page rss or mac rss. Click on it and you will be taken to a page where you specify how you want to receive the feed.

  • Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer 7 (see RSS in IE Help)
    • Click on Subscribe to this feed (text)
    • Change name of feed (optional)
    • Click on Subscribe (button)
    • To view feeds click on Favorites, Feeds tab
    • Find a step-by-step procedure here
  • Mac OS Safari
    • If RSS Preferences set to Mail
      • Click Add button
      • View in left column of Mail
    • If RSS Preferences set to Safari
      • Click on Bookmarks
      • Click on Add bookmark
      • Specify where to save
      • View in Bookmarks or Bookmarks Toolbar
  • Alternatively, for Microsoft Windows, download the free RSS Reader program.

Although the word "subscribe" is used, there is no actual subscription (in the traditional sense of the word) involved. You do not need to give your email address, fork out any money, nor furnish any information whatsoever. Your feed reader does all the real work: it checks the website regularly to see if the feed has been updated. If the latter has been changed, the feed reader software will inform you and allow you to read it, giving you the illusion that you have subscribed to some sort of newsletter or message service.
