The 57th annual Southern
Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF) was held at
the University of Tennessee April 7-9, 2009. Section Vice Chair Martin Bauer judged the contestants and made the following IEEE Special Awards for he best demonstrations of electrical or electronics design or computer science.
$50 prize for twoJunior Division students:
JCPS-01 "The Shocking Truth About Memory", Caroline Wallace, from Maryville School
(Junior Computer Science )
JEEM-14 "Let Go My Lego! Robot", Kyle Wehrenberg from Episcopal School of Knoxville
(Junior Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical)
A $100 prize for one Senior Division student:
SCPS-01 "Data Mining and Visualization: Predicting the Next Epidemic", Rowan Chakoumakos, Oak Ridge High School
(Senior Computer Science), also* *Senior Grand Reserve Champion (2nd place in senior division)
Both Pellissippi State and the University of Tennessee student branches competed in event at SoutheastCon 2009 in Atlanta, GA in March. The UT hardware robotics team came in 2nd and the PSTCC team came in 11th out of 44 teams. The UT ethics team came in 2nd out of 11 entries. Below is a picture of the UT robotics team which included (l-r) Rosie West, Matt Ezell, Nick Jones, Wes Forbes, Jeremy Brantley, Phil Irminger, Justin Kopp (not shown), and Aaron Driskill (not shown). The second photos shows the entire UT contingent who attended SoutheastCon with the 2nd place trophy.

Both Pellissippi State and the University of Tennessee student branches attended SoutheastCon 2008 in Huntsville, AL in April. They both competed in the hardware robotics competition and UT also competed in other events. You can learn more about UT's efforts on their website.

The Section was a sponsor of the Tennessee Science Bowl in 2008 and 2009.
In 2008, the
section also provided volunteers including 3 Section members
and 3 UT Student Branch members. Fifty-four teams from
33 high schools from across the state participated in the
all-day academic competition, which featured questions
focused on the scientific disciplines of astronomy,
chemistry, biology, earth and general science, mathematics,
and physics. The first place team was from Oak
Ridge High School and will receive an al-expense paid trip
to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. in May. Two
teams from Farragut High School placed second and third.
IEEE Student Members who are scheduled to
graduate in 2007 will automatically receive a 50% discount off their 2008
renewal bill. This discount is applicable regardless of the degree being
received. Under such a scenario, they would retain their eligibility for the 50%
discount once they have completed their next degree and have not reached the
eight-year student limit.
This “recent graduate” discount is only available once in a lifetime. Therefore, any member who has previously taken the
discount upon receiving an earlier degree would not be eligible to claim it
again. To qualify for the discount, the Student Member must transition directly
to Higher Grade membership immediately after graduation, without any break in
membership. The graduate does not need to fill out any paperwork to qualify.
Their 2008 renewal invoice will automatically reflect the discount.
In order to receive their renewal notice
graduates need to keep IEEE informed of their fall address either online with a
member web account myIEEE or by sending new contact information to address-change@ieee.org.
Section Student Branch Pellissippi State Technical
Community College entered the Hardware Robotics
competition at SoutheastCon 2007 in Richmond, VA held March 22 -
25. They were one of only two 2 year colleges
entered, Of the 38 colleges and universities
competing, PSTCC placed 6th.

The 55th annual Southern
Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair was held at
the University of Tennessee March 6 and 7, 2007.
Past Section Chair Al Akerman and Section Vice Chair
Terry Kurtz participated as judges. Al selected 4
exhibits for IEEE Special Awards while Terry worked
with 3 other judges to select the Junior Division
Team winners. Terry returned to present the IEEE
awards of $50 and framed certificates to Ryan Dadmun,
Hannah Hash, Will Walker, and Clark Buckner. Clark
was unable to attend the ceremony. Learn more about
SASEF and see other photos at www.sasef.com.

The section supports the Oak Ridge
High School Robotics team in their quest to design an
autonomous submarine robot. You can view their progress on
their blog at http://sofasub.blogspot.com/
The section sponsored home schooled
robotics teams last year You can see pictures from a
demonstration that gave at the American Museum of Science
and Energy in Oak Ridge on the CFC Robotics Teams page.
The section endorses and offers
technical workshops to teachers to foster the pursuit of
science and engineering education. Learn more on the Teacher
In Service Program page.
