Welcome to the Huntsville Chapter of the IEEE EMC Society. This society's purpose is to further the EMC presence in the Huntsville area. By coming together we can increase the bandwidth of all our member's knowledge by learning from one another.

Next Meeting:

Date: 19 January 2012
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Location: ADTRAN Inc. North Tower, Bridge Training Room:

Speaker:
Ken Javor, EMC Compliance

The Huntsville chapter of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society invites you to attend a technical meeting on 19 January 2012. The program will begin at 5:30 pm with Wiley Laboratories sponsoring a free catered meal. Ken Javor's presentation will begin at approximately 6:20 pm after some short chapter status updates.
Meeting Invitation

Meal Sponsor:

"Pot Roast & Roast Turkey Dinner"
Slow Cooked Pot Roast with New Potatoes and Carrots, Slow Roast Turkey with Traditional Dressing and Giblet Gravy, Southern Green Beans, Pasta Salad, Garden Salad with Assorted Dressings, Soup of the Day, Fresh Hot Rolls, Homemade Peach Cobbler and Iced Tea

Presentation Topic:
"EMI Testing Potpouri"

The first subject is the nature of the 41" rod antenna, and a comparison of how it has been used to how it actually works. This presentation is based on an article in the 2011 ITEM. The takeaway conclusion is that the 41" rod is an electric field probe whose military and aerospace use has been at odds with how it actually works. MIL-STD-461F improved the implementation, but even better implementations exist.

The second topic is an alternative audio frequency conducted susceptibility injection technique. The traditional technique has been that in MIL-STD-461 CS01/CS101 and RTCA/DO-160 section 18 and derivative methods. For some applications, the use of the traditional coupling transformers entails some risk, and this alternative technique ameliorates that risk. The technique is based on a test method developed in the early 1960s for the Apollo program Lunar Exploration Module (LEM). The presentation is based on an article in the April 2011 IN Compliance magazine.

The last topic is a test aid developed to aid monitoring audio frequency ripple injected on an ac power pus. Monitoring a few Volts of ripple injected at frequencies near the power frequency superimposed on a 120 Vrms bus potential is difficult and/or expensive. The test aid presented is relatively inexpensive and converts the time domain superposition into frequency domain separation, while providing the required isolation without floating the EMI receiver’s enclosure from safety ground.

The meal and presentations are open to anyone interested in EMC: IEEE membership is not required to attend.

Seating is limited to the first 100 who reply. You must Register at https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/meeting_view/list_meeting/10069 or RSVP to Jack McFadden at jack.mcfadden@wyle.com as soon as you can, but no later than close of business 17 April 2012.

Please RSVP with your intent to attend and if you will be joining us for the meal. Each RSVP will receive a confirmation email.
