Presentation Topic:
"EMI Testing Potpouri"
|
The first subject is the nature of the 41" rod antenna, and a comparison of how it has been used to how it actually works. This presentation is based on an article in the 2011 ITEM. The takeaway conclusion is that the 41" rod is an electric field probe whose military and aerospace use has been at odds with how it actually works. MIL-STD-461F improved the implementation, but even better implementations exist.
The second topic is an alternative audio frequency conducted susceptibility injection technique. The traditional technique has been that in MIL-STD-461 CS01/CS101 and RTCA/DO-160 section 18 and derivative methods. For some applications, the use of the traditional coupling transformers entails some risk, and this alternative technique ameliorates that risk. The technique is based on a test method developed in the early 1960s for the Apollo program Lunar Exploration Module (LEM). The presentation is based on an article in the April 2011 IN Compliance magazine.
The last topic is a test aid developed to aid monitoring audio frequency ripple injected on an ac power pus. Monitoring a few Volts of ripple injected at frequencies near the power frequency superimposed on a 120 Vrms bus potential is difficult and/or expensive. The test aid presented is relatively inexpensive and converts the time domain superposition into frequency domain separation, while providing the required isolation without floating the EMI receiver’s enclosure from safety ground.
