    Professional Activities
  • WNC IEEE Resources Directory - Provides WNC businesses with temporary or part time local EE support, for reasonable fees, usually from retirees on a contract or consulting basis. Definition is currently in-work.
  • WNC IEEE Networking - Ongoing activity to help unemployed members connected with local employers.
  • Regular WNC Section Meetings - Ongoing monthly meetings including local business/government tours of interest to members, presentations, dinners, etc.
  • Member Survey - In development, to get suggestions from members.
  •
    CHALLENGES:
Membership Participation - Many of our members are retired and LM's, no longer overly interested in the tech world.  Potential is to have these members volunteer to participate in student activities.  Younger, working members need to see the value-add in coming to meetings and/or participating. Very limited engineering employment opportunities in our area.

    Winston-Salem Section Report
    To
    North Carolina Council
    March 5, 2005
    NC State University, Raleigh, NC
The Winston-Salem Section of IEEE continues to be very active and a major voice for IEEE within our geographic area of North Carolina.

2004 was a very successful year for our Section.  We held seven Section Meetings that included presentations by leading authorities on the following subjects:
"Defining the future of drug discovery at Targacept",
"Wireless Technology Overview Part 2 and 3",
    "Cluster Computing-Overview and History",
"Grand Challenge- Autonomous Military Vehicles By 2015", "Nanotechnology Applications In Medicine",
"Nanotechnology Degree Program at Forsyth Technical Community College".

Attendance at our Section Meetings continues to be excellent with about 25 to 45 in attendance.  We are grateful to WFU School of Medicine for allowing our Section to use their Biomedical Engineering Teleconference Center for our Section meeting and a source of outstanding speakers.

In January we held our first Section Meeting for 2005 and had a presentation by Dr. David L. Carroll on "Nanotechnology - Nanotech at WFU-Part 2". In February Dr. Joel L. Berry gave us a very interesting presentation on "Vascular Stent Design".  On March 22 Dr. Paul Laurienti will give us a presentation on the "The Aging Brain".  On April 26, Wesley Clark is scheduled to make a presentation on "IP Telephony".

As a part of our 2005 Engineers Week Celebration we were one of the sponsors of the 2nd Annual Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Egg Drop Contest.  This competition is designed to promote engineering and science in the K-12 community.  It's also an excellent opportunity to encourage ALL students to consider math, science and other technical disciplines as career options.

We continue to try to keep our membership informed of what is going on with our Section, Region 3, and IEEE by operating a Section Web Site and mailing a hardcopy of our Newsletter, "Grit & Grin" to all active members.

We may be the smallest Section in the NC Council as far as the number of members but our volunteer leaders try hard at being one of the best.
