IEEE NWF Section Meeting
5:30 PM – 7:30PM, Thursday, January 28, 2010
University of Florida REEF Facility, Shalimar, FL
Agenda: Seating of 2010 Officers, and An Exciting Presentation:
"What You
Don’t Know About Passive Components Could Hurt You"
A new and excited group of Section Officers will lead
the IEEE NWF section during 2010. Please join us in welcoming the new
Officers. Also, In keeping with the spirit to serve its membership, the new
IEEE NWF Section officers are pleased to announce the next monthly seminar
in Shalimar, FL. This seminar is part of the series of electro technology
topics of great interest to the IEEE NWF membership, other technical
professionals, and students in our region. This seminar will be held at the
University of Florida Research, and Engineering Education Facility (REEF).
The technical topic would be presented in a fundamental and tutorial manner
that would help a novice as well as professionals.
TOPIC: The January
2010 topic is “What You Don’t Know About Passive Components Could Hurt You.”
This tutorial presentation will be presented by Gary Gentry, Anritsu Field
Applications Engineer. He will demonstrate the measurements of passive
components’ (such as resistors, capacitors and inductors) characteristics in
the range of 70 kHz to 70 GHz using an advanced Vector Network Analyzer and
a universal test fixture. He will be facilitated by Dr. Maqsood Mohammed
from Jacobs Technology, TEAS Group at Eglin AFB, FL, to explain the
theoretical foundation of the nonlinearities and surprises about the
characteristics of passive components. Hands-on demonstration of surface
mount devices’ characteristics in the range of 70 kHz to 70 GHz, will be the
highlight of the presentation.
PRESENTERS: Gary
Gentry, Field Applications Engineer, Anritsu, and Dr. Maqsood Mohammed,
Technical Fellow, Jacobs Technology, Eglin AFB, FL.
WHERE: The seminar
will be presented at the University of Florida Research and Engineering
Education Facility (REEF), located at 1350 North Poquito Road, Shalimar, FL
32579.
WHEN: Jan 28, 2010,
17:30 – 18:00 – Social 18:00 – 19:30 - Seminar
SPECIAL NOTE: Pizza
will be provided by the IEEE NWF Section.
RSVP to: to
jhogue@icbergan.com. This technical seminar is free to all IEEE members with
an active IEEE member number.
BACKGROUND: Due to a
ubiquitous increase in high speed digital electronics and telecommunication
devices (such as a cell phone) the importance of designing high speed
electronics has reached a new level. At such high frequencies, several of
the usual simplifying assumptions, true at lower frequencies, are no longer
valid and an electrical engineer must recognize new ways of dealing with
this reality. The electrical dimensions of a component or a circuit play a
crucial role in determining its behavior. Little things could mean a lot,
especially, if there are parasitic effects at these frequencies. At high
data rates, and frequencies dominant effects are the key factors to
understand a component’s behavior. For example, a resistor can act like an
inductor or a capacitor, and a capacitor can be resistive or inductive at
some frequencies. These and other similar anomalous behavior of components
will be discussed.
If you have a need to understand how components impact your circuit or
system design or if you simply want to expand your technical knowledge in
this area to improve your marketability, you owe it to yourself and you
cannot afford to miss this opportunity to enhance your skills through this
tutorial and hands-on demonstration-based seminar.
Please RSVP with the IEEE NWF Section Secretary, Jin
Hogue, by sending him an email at
jhogue@icbergan.com.
Knowing the number of attendees will help us plan for
the food during the seminar.
