IEEE NWF Section Meeting

5:30 PM – 7:00 PM, July 21, 2009 at the

University of Florida REEF Facility, Shalimar, FL

In keeping with the spirit to serve its membership, the IEEE NWF Section is pleased to announce its next monthly seminar in Shalimar, FL.  This seminar is the sixth in a series of electrotechnology topics of great interest to the IEEE NWF membership, other technical professionals, and students in our region.  This seminar will be held at the University of Florida Research, and Engineering Education Facility (REEF).  The technical topic would be presented in a fundamental and tutorial manner that would help a novice as well as professionals.

TOPIC: The July 2009 topic deals with Nonlinear Behavior of Passive Components at Higher Frequencies.  This technical presentation by Dr. Maqsood Mohammed from Jacobs Technology, TEAS Group at Eglin AFB, FL, will explore, in a tutorial manner, how linear components exhibit nonlinear characteristics at higher frequencies.  Hands-on demonstration will be a highlight of the presentation.

PRESENTER: Dr. Maqsood Mohammed, Technical Fellow, Jacobs Technology.  Dr. Mohammed received M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Oklahoma University.  Dr. Mohammed is currently a Technical Fellow in Electromagnetic (EM) Effects and Directed Energy at Jacobs Technology, where he has been a member of the technical staff for 20 years.  Prior to joining Sverdrup, he worked in process control, medical instrumentation, and computer peripherals industries.  He has also taught undergraduate courses in electrical engineering as an adjunct faculty member and advised graduate research work.  Dr. Mohammed has developed numerous one-of-a-kind solutions to complicated electromagnetic problems.  His experience includes various commercial, DoD, and NASA systems.  His expertise also includes independent verification and validation (IV&V) of EM effects modeling and simulation (M&S) tools.

Dr. Mohammed has been active in the IEEE EMC Society since 1991.  He has also been active at the regional level, including as the NW Florida Section Chair.  In 1992 he conceived and led the EMC fundamentals tutorial workshop and nurtured it to become the most-attended workshop at the IEEE EMC-S Annual Symposium.  During his tenure as Chair of the EMC-S Education and Student Activities Committee (1998-2006), he introduced several new programs such as EMC Fundamentals Tutorial, Student Paper Contest, Student Design Contest, Symposium Experiment Hardware and Software (M&S) Demonstrations, University Grant program, and Tutorial Videos.  Dr. Mohammed’s long, dedicated and exceptional service to the EMC-S community was recognized by the EMC-S Board and he was awarded the prestigious first ever “Sustained Service to the EMC Society Award” in 2007.

WHERE: The seminar will be presented at the University of Florida Research and Engineering Education Facility (REEF), located at 1350 North Poquito Road, Shalimar, FL 32579.

WHEN: July 21, 2009, 17:30 – 18:00 – Social                                                                                                                                     18:00 – 19:00 - Seminar

SPECIAL NOTE: Pizza will be provided by the IEEE NWF Section

RSVP to:  nwf_secretary@ieee.org or you can also call Doug Cross at 850-332-7900 x105.  This technical seminar is free to all IEEE members with an active IEEE member number.

BACKGROUND: Due to a ubiquitous increase in high speed digital electronics and telecommunication devices (such as a cell phone) the importance of designing high speed electronics has reached a new level.  At such high frequencies, several of the usual simplifying assumptions, true at lower frequencies, are no longer valid and an electrical engineer must recognize new ways of dealing with this reality.  The electrical dimensions of a component or a circuit play a crucial role in determining its behavior.  Little things could mean a lot, especially, if there are parasitic effects at these frequencies.  At high data rates, and frequencies dominant effects are the key factors to understand a component’s behavior.  For example, a resistor can act like an inductor or a capacitor, and a capacitor can be resistive or inductive at some frequencies.   These and other similar anomalous behavior of components will be discussed.

If you have a need to understand how components impact your circuit or system design or if you simply want to expand your technical knowledge in this area to improve your marketability, you owe it to yourself and you cannot afford to miss this opportunity to enhance your skills through this tutorial and hands-on demonstration-based seminar.  Here is the detail:  Please RSVP with the IEEE NWF Section Secretary, Doug Cross, by sending him an email at nwf_secretary@ieee.org.  Knowing the number of attendees will help us plan for the food during the seminar.
