Research at the Intersection of Fluid Mechanics and Control Systems
Presenter: Dr. Howard Hamilton -
AFRL/MNGN
Location: Total Parts Plus Bldg. 709
Anchors St. Fort Walton Beach Map
Social: 6:30pm
- 7:00pm Presentation: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Topic:
For
too long, the fluid mechanics and control systems communities have had
difficulty in communicating, because of differences in terminology,
assumptions, and objectives. This unfortunate development has
precluded collaboration on basic research problems that might have
benefited from an interdisciplinary approach. As engineering projects
become more systems-oriented and interdisciplinary, researchers who know
(and most importantly, understand) the two fields and can integrate them
effectively become a valuable asset. In this seminar I will talk
about research conducted at the intersection of fluid mechanics and control
systems with applications to the basic research issues surrounding micro air
vehicles. I will discuss two ongoing research projects and explain
the benefits of bridging gaps between simulation and experiment, theory and
application, and fluid mechanics and control systems.

Round Table Discussion
Presenter: IEEE Officers and Members
Location: Total
Parts Plus Bldg. 709 Anchors
St. Fort Walton Beach
Map
Social: 6:30pm - 7:00pm Presentation:
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Topic: The monthly meeting on August 17th will
consist of a Round Table Discussion with our members. We will take this opportunity to get
feedback on how we're doing as an organization, answer any questions that
attendees may have, and gather information that will allow us to put
together a program plan for the upcoming year. Please come out and join in to help
make the upcoming year a great success! We will begin the discussion with a
speed networking session where we will ask those in attendance to give a
brief description of who they are, where they work or worked, and their
area of emphasis. This will
allow all members in attendance the opportunity to get to know one
another. Please have your elevator
speech ready-it should be fun!
This is also an excellent opportunity for our independent
consultants/contractors to come out and tell us about themselves and the
work they do. For this meeting,
we will gather at the TGI Fridays in Mary Esther from 5pm - 6:30pm.

“Technologies Enabling Agility &
Autonomy for Micro Air Vehicles”
Presenter:
Dr. Rick Lind,
Assistant Professor Dept of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Location: Total Parts Plus Bldg. 709 Anchors St. Fort Walton
Beach, FL
Date: November 16th 2006
Social: 5:00 - 5:30pm Presentation: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Topic:
The proliferation of
micro air vehicles (MAV) with flight capability has caused a demand for
technologies related to mission performance. In particular, a MAV is ideally
suited to operating in urban environments so agility and autonomy are
critical to achieve mission capability. This talk will
overview recent advancements in vision-based feedback for autonomy and
adaptive-structures morphing for agility. The vision technologies use a
combination of optic flow and structure from motion to gain situational
awareness of the vehicle and its surroundings. The morphing technologies use
biologically-inspired joints and shapes to achieve highly-agile maneuvering
and sensor emplacement. A
series of these developments will be highlighted through demonstrations
from simulation and flight testing.
