SENIOR
MEMBERSHIP UPGRADE
The section is preparing a plan to find references for those
members seeking to upgrade their membership. The newly
elected Membership Development Chair, Richard Wu, will be
the project coordinator for matching possible references for
applicants and will also educate those who are new to the
process. The section has many references on file already and
if you are a senior or fellow grade who would act as a
reference, please contact the Chair. There are also several
applications on file and your patience has been appreciated.
Your names will be circulated among the references for
selection to the next step in the process. The A&A
Committee meets periodically and the process does take time.
There are six meetings scheduled for the remainder of 2004
in various locations. Please be patient. It is important
that Palm Beach Section act as nominating entity in order to
receive credit for this effort, unless another entity has
already been entered. Please indicate Palm Beach Section on
the application.
For new applicants, visit: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/smprogram.html

BOYNTON
BEACH COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL LIGHTNING
PROJECT
Currently, BBCHS has received approval for installation of a
system to protect the school campus from lightening strikes.
A firm form Jupiter has been initially offered the contract
with no apparent competitive bids. The adult school
principal still requests section assistance and the section
has accepted Miguel Gutierrez as Palm Beach Section Project
Coordinator. Several members have communicated interest both
professionally and as volunteers and Miguel will act as
coordinator.
The project name will be as follows: "Cocuyos/Firefly".
Cocuyos translates as lightning bug or firefly from a South
American Native American dialect.

THE
SCRIPPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE
The Scripps Research
Institute has broken ground to establish a major science
center focusing on biomedical research, technology
development and drug design. It will be initially funded by
the state of Florida and will be self-sufficient after seven
years. It is anticipated that after twenty years, upwards to
5000 personnel will be employed directly or in spin-off
companies. Scripps Florida as it is now known will be part
of a state-wide cluster of bio-medical
facilities.
TSRI is based in La
Jolla, CA and this expansion will allow it to have locations
on both coasts.
