Program: The Forensic Audio, Video and Image Analysis Unit (FAVIAU) at the Engineering Research Facility (ERF) of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) - An Overview of Operations and Topics in Audio Authenticity (including Digital Audio Authenticity Applications Relating to the National Power Grid)
The mission of the FBI Forensic Audio, Video and Image Analysis Unit (FAVIAU) is to provide local and federal law enforcement agencies technical, scientific, and forensic services on Digital Evidence submissions.
William L. Hinton, an Electronics Engineer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will:
- Present an overview of FAVIAU operations
- Discuss how FAVIAU deals with Audio Authenticity examinations, including:
- The origin of Audio Authenticity analysis at the FBI with the examination of the Nixon White House Tapes
- Current Digital Audio Authenticity analysis activities in regard to the National Power Grid

William L. Hinton
William L. Hinton began his career with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1984, when he began working in the FBI Las Vegas Field Division.
In 1993, Bill Hinton received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After receiving his degree, Mr. Hinton continued with the FBI Las Vegas Field Division as an Electronic Technician working on the FBI’s two-way communication systems, alarms, access controls, CCTV, and nationwide network.
In 2005, Bill Hinton accepted an Engineering Technician position with the Forensic Audio, Video, and Image Analysis Unit (FAVIAU) at the FBI Engineering Research Facility (ERF) in Quantico, Virginia.
In 2007, Bill Hinton accepted his current position, as an Electronics Engineering in FAVIAU and began training as an Forensic Audio Examiner.
Bill Hinton is a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

RSVP (Register):
You must pre-register (RSVP) for the meeting. Please register/RSVP on line by 1:00 PM on Monday, November 30, 2009.
We must give the restaurant an accurate count of attendees to ensure proper room setup, and an accurate count (by entree) of those dining to ensure sufficient food. The section must pay for all meals based on any attendance counts given to the restaurant after 1:00 PM, Monday, November 30, 2009.
If you miss the Monday, 1:00 PM deadline, you may still register; and, we will work with the restaurant to accommodate you. (If we are unable to seat you, we will notify you; and, you will not responsible for fee payment.) Be sure to include your contact information with you registration.
However, we ask you to please register as early as possible to allow us as much time as possible to plan to ensure proper setup and adequate supplies and staffing.

Cancellation/No-Show Policy:
If you confirm attendance, the IEEE Richmond Section has to pay for your meal.
If you cancel after the deadline, or do not show up for the meal, please send us a check or money order for the proper amount ($25 non-member professionals or guests, $20 professional members, $10 non-member students, or $5 for student members or IEEE Special Circumstances Members).
