ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

SOUTH CAROLINA COUNCIL OF THE INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS STUDENT PRIZE SPEAKING CONTEST ELIGIBILITY To be eligible to enter the competition, the speaker must be a student member in good standing with the IEEE in Region 3 at the time that the entry is submitted. The student must also be an undergraduate in the spring term of the year the speech is presented. At total of three speakers will be permitted from each university. The members of the judging team present at the competition will decide any questions as to eligibility or deviation from prescribed procedures. PRIZES The South Carolina Council will provide the prizes as follows: First Place - $150 Second Place - $100 Third Place - $ 75 PRESENTATION Each contestant will have 15 minutes for the oral presentation and 5 minutes for a question and answer period. A timekeeper will indicate, how a contestants time is progressing and when each of their prescribed time periods are completed. The South Carolina Council Chair will appoint three oral judges and a timekeeper. The winner will be determined by obtaining the highest score at the end of the competition as judged by the scoring criteria.
STUDENT SPEAKER SCORING CRITERIA
The contestant should not be unduly nervous and display annoying mannerisms. The speaker should exhibit clarity of speech and proper grammar in the presentation Presentation of material should follow a logical course and should stimulate the thinking of the audience. The presentation should begin with a proper introduction. Background of the problem should be made clear before proceeding to the main body of the presentation. Conclusions should be briefly summarized. The speaker should exhibit a clear understanding of the topic, of the important related literature, and of the associated technical theory. The presentation should be technically sound and the fundamental nature of the subject clearly described. The speaker should display a reasonable knowledge of the subject by answering the questions adequately.
