MEETING MINUTES

I.            MEMBERSHIP

Senior Grade Members – Need to renew efforts to increase senior membership prior to 30 November 04.  Ensure new senior members are sponsored through Sections in order for the Sections to obtain credit for rebates.

SAMI – The region has 30,000 members but has 48,000 members registered in SAMI.  Old members are purged after three years.  One way to reduce tracking email changes of members is to encourage members to obtain ieee.org  E-mail accounts

Members who do not renew – The best way to obtain new members is to pursue members that do not renew.  Technicians can obtain Associate IEEE membership.

II.            SECTION ACTIVITIES

Web-site update

L31 and L50 reports – will be due shortly, including for the Council.  (Steve has the Council archive files.)  The Columbia Section inputs their reports immediately after each meeting.

Programs – discussion was about potential programs/meetings/events.  Steve proposed Ken and others pursue a joint plant tour with the Savannah Section of a new electric generating plant in Jasper County.  Lee discussed the ICAR project in the upstate.  Another program could be financial planning for members.

PACE activities and programs – Lee discussed a program conducted in Oregon on career transition for those between jobs even within the same company.  A financial planning meeting would also meet the PACE requirements that allow sections to claim a rebate through the M-PAC program.

Hard Copy Newsletter requirement – Sections are required to send one hard copy newsletter or notice to members each year.

NOTE: Sections could provide meeting information for the Council to post on its web site.

III.         JOINT MEETINGS

Steve advised of a suggestion to combine a Columbia Section Engineer’s Week banquet with other engineering associations.   Note that Coastal already has a combined banquet during engineers week.

There was a suggestion to send a congratulations letter to those passing the PE.

www.eweek.org , the address of ‘Connecting Word to Engineering Forum’, is a resource for IEEE members and other disciplines.  Lee is the moderator for the EE page.

Members should be encouraged to perform outreach at schools on behalf of IEEE or their employers.

IV.            COMMUNICATIONS

The IEEE Listserve, e-notice, and  is available for the Council and members use.  See Lee’s sheet (get from Ken)

V.            EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Region 3 employment assistance can be viewed at www.ieee.org/r3jobs and contains job listings, job resource information, and other assistance.  Most opportunities never make the newspaper or other announcements, but are posted locally.  A localized referral program could utilize input from members that is posted by a local section member.

VI.            TREASURERS REPORT

There was no financial report at this meeting.

VII.            FUTURE MEETINGS

The next Council meeting is scheduled as an e-Conference on 13 January 2005.  Other meetings will be held:

08-10 April 2005 at SECON

14-16 October 2005 at the Sections Conference

 Other Meetings:

18 November 04 - Computer Society Meeting

NOTE:

We are in the first year of the two year election cycle for the SC Council.  Year 2004 past section chairs will be included on SC Council meeting and other notices at the beginning of 2005.  We need to emphasize getting new section officers registered in SAMI in January 2005.
