Speaker’s Biography: Dr. Thompson is a graduate of the University of Florida where he received his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. He recently joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio as Professor and Interim Chair. He previously was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Thompson is actively involved in biomaterials research in the areas of dental restorative materials and implants, advanced milling techniques for bioceramics, mechanical behavior and wear phenomena of structural biomaterials, and interfacial phenomena associated with the cementation/attachment of synthetic biomaterials with an emphasis on surface modification. His main areas of expertise are structure/property relationships and failure analysis.
He is a member of various professional organizations including The American Ceramic Society, The International Association of Dental Research, where he is a former President of the Dental Materials Group, and the Academy of Dental Materials, in which he is a Fellow. He serves as a reviewer for several journals, including The Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, The Journal of Materials Research, Dental Materials, The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, The Journal of Dental Research, and Thin Solid Films.
Dr. Thompson's research has been published in forty-eight journal articles and sixty-six abstracts. He has also presented fifty-one scientific papers at regional, national and international research meetings. Dr. Thompson's research is primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health were he also serves as a sitting member of the Oral, Dental and Craniofacial Sciences study section
