Significant Performance Section

Requirements for Significant Performance can be summarized as: In general this portion of the application is intended to give the reviewer knowledge of specifically what YOU did related to a specific project or activity. General statements such as "was a part of the team" or resume material such as "2005 through 2006 design engineer" IS NOT SUFFICIENT to provide your application reviewer specific knowledge of what you did.

Suggestions are to define each specific example of significant performance in the following format

To make the process easier, listed below are several examples from successful applications to use a guide. The examples are ONLY suggestions as many other formats have been used with successful applications. Candidates that have both commercial and academic experience can use each experience type as necessary to provide the required 5 years of demonstrated significant performance.

Engineer in Commercial Company

    Example 1

    In 1991, I researched, developed and documented testing and commissioning procedures for relay technicians. This effort took 6 months. It was significant in that Central Power and Light was just beginning to use microprocessor-based protective relays, of varying manufacture and model and the procedures I developed were used as standards to install those devices correctly and reliability for years to come.

    Example 2

    I led the development of a new IC design methodology for a global customer in US. I was responsible for relocating and building a team of 10 CAD engineers, developing and deploying the new IC design methodology on-site and earning $5M in direct revenue over two years. I spent 2 years on this activity.

    Example 3

    I led the integration team for a DSP core design targeted for the first wireless platform chip by TI. I was responsible for design optimization and top-level integration to reach 150Mhz target. I managed a team of 5 design engineers to achieve the target performance. I spent 1 year on this activity.

    Example 4

    I developed a pre-production control system for an Automated Manual Transmission. Automated Manual Transmissions are manual transmissions fitted with actuators for shifting and clutching. The control system development consists of concept design, detailed design, modeling, wiring, in vehicle communications, and testing/tuning of algorithms. In doing this project I was project phase manager for control systems. As a result of this project, a major Chinese car manufacturer is building several prototypes enroute to production for light duty vehicles. My employer has copy righted and patented the control algorithms (AutoshifterTM). I spent 15 months on this project.

Educator in Academia

    Example 1

    I designed the curriculum for the Software Engineering Masters degree at Texas State University. I was responsible for developing each of the core courses in the curriculum, teaching each of the courses, and maintaining the curriculum over the past eight years. (24 months)

    Example 2

    I conducted research in the area of technology forensics, which is in the IEEE field of Software Engineering and Software Security. The research work I performed resulted in the publication of a journal paper entitled, "Toward Defining the Intersection of Forensics and Information Technology" in the International Journal of Digital Evidence (2005). This paper helps establish the boundaries of the emerging technology forensics domain and outlines the cross-disciplinary skills needed by technology forensics specialists. (6 months)

    Example 3

    I redesigned the software engineering project courses at XX University in order to coordinate graduate and undergraduate student projects. Graduate students were assigned to serve as team leaders of undergraduate project teams in the development of embedded software solutions for Palm OS handheld devices. This new approach to software engineering education resulted in a conference paper publication entitled "Using Unfamiliar Platforms in Software Engineering Projects" which appeared in the proceedings of the International Conference on Information Technology, April 2005, Las Vegas, Nevada. The project data was collected over four academic semesters spanning four years. The data also fed into a graduate student thesis project which I led. (12 months)
