Our last meeting was .. Computer Simulation for System Level EMC Design
Download the presentation here(~5MB) Presenter : Dr. Fred German Senior Consulting Engineer, Flomerics, Inc Date : October 22nd 2002 Location: TUV Product
Service, 5541 Central Avenue Boulder, CO 80301-2846 What we saw: Ever-increasing clock speeds have greatly increased electromagnetic emissions from computer processors and ASICs. Consequently the containment of electromagnetic radiation has become a major factor in the physical design of electronic systems. Dr German had a number of objectives in mind with this presentation namely: to introduce Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) as a design tool, provide overview of the different techniques and finally demonstrate, via example, what is really possible/practical with CEM for EMC. Dr German touched on a process that must be familiar to all EMC Engineers - the “test and fix” paradigm. That seemingly never ending process that is becoming less and less acceptable in today’s highly competitive electronics market. After introducing Maxwells equations (as the heart of most modeling software) Dr German touched on the two deceptively simple steps to modeling - Draw it, it and Solve with the software handling everything in between. Dr German emphasized that CEM would NOT answer the timeless question heard a thousand times by EMC Engineers: "Will my unit pass the emissions test". Rather the simulation will point to trends and be able to refine the design during the design phase. Dr German went over some of the historical problems of CEM and then showed some case studies of CEM applied to test cases designed by TC 9 Computational Electromagnetics Technical Activities Committee. To take a quote from last months meeting: Using CEM, EMC Engineers will no longer have to say "It depends" when presented with an EMC problem - now they can say "Lets simulate it and find out!!. Finally the officers of the EMC Society would like to extend our thanks to TUV Product Service for providing the nice variety of sodas at the meeting. The pizza was provided by the EMC Society.
