Date : December 4th 2003 Location : Westin Hotel, Westminster. LakeView Pavilion Presenter :Dr. Eric Bogatin - Bio What we saw: After holding quite a few meetings during the year, the officers of the RMCEMC decided that a special thank you meeting was in order. We wanted to provide a special meeting in which our members and affiliates could meet mingle and generally get to know each other. A controversial topic - regarding traces causing EMI, was the excuse and coincidentally Eric had just published a technical book on Signal Integrity. The EMC equivalent of a perfect storm. In order to make the evening really special and generate some excitement, it was decided to have a buffet and the Westin Hotel turned out to be the perfect location. The room they supplied was very comfortable and boasted views of a fountain and the mountains. During discussions with Eric it was apparent that partial inductance is the link between EMC and SI and we had the perfect subject. The goal of this presentation was to present an explanation of the net inductance of the return path and the origin of ground bounce. Using simple explanations Eric took us through an analysis of inductance and how its the inductance in the return path that contributes significantly to an EMI engineers headaches. By understanding how this voltage is generated and what design factors influence it, we can understand how this looks like a dipole antenna and what will increase or decrease the driven common currents. After the meeting, we raffled two of Eric's new book, generously donated by the publisher Prentice Hall, to two lucky winners Otto Buhler and Kevin Height.

Dr. Eric Bogatin is the Chief Technical Officer at GigaTest Labs, specializing in the accessories for optimizing high bandwidth, Signal Integrity Measurements. GiaTest also provides help for customers designs, and provides services for the measurement , characterizantion and troubleshooting for high bandwidth products. They also provide comprehensive Signal Integrity training, emphasizing practical engineering techniques. In addition to private and public short courses from fundamental to advanced levels, Dr. Bogatin publishes many papers on Signal Integrity topics. A number of them are available for free download from the GigaTest Labs web site. |
