Fort Worth IEEE PES Home Page

The Power Engineering Society deals with the planning, research, development, design, application, construction, installation, and operation of apparatus, equipment, structures, materials and systems for the safe, reliable and economic generation, transmission, distribution, conversion, measurement, and control of electric energy. It includes the developing of engineering standards, the providing of information and instruction to the public and to legislators as well as technical scientific, literary, educational and other activities that contribute to the electric power discipline.

The Fort Worth Chapter IEEE PES is comprised of approximately 200 members with affiliations to various utilities and power equipment companies. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Petroleum Club in downtown Fort Worth. The typical meeting is attended by 40 - 50 engineers, technicians and managers.

Topic: Combined Cycle Generation and Repowering Power Plants

Speaker: Kam Joshi - Advanced Generation Engineering Manager, TU Electric

Abstract: Combined cycle generation is generation of electric power from both a Brayton gas turbine cycle with a Rankine steam turbine cycle extracting energy from the waste heat of the gas turbine exhaust. This leads to a very efficient system which is the best new gas fired technology available for the power industry. Repowering a power plant consists of converting it to combined cycle operation by adding a new gas turbine and waste heat boiler while reusing the existing steam turbine. This results in a very efficient plant while reducing the overall cost of the combined cycle plant. Because of the increase in generation at the plant (approximately twice the existing generation), new transmission lines or beefing up other lines in the transmission system are sometimes needed.
