Meeting Description:
Please plan to attend this meeting of the Industry Applications Society (IAS). The speaker will be Chet Sandberg,
Principal at C L Sandberg & Associates.
The military has identified five “domains” for defense. The original three, land, sea and air are now joined by space
and cyber. Cyber Security has significant ramifications in process plants, electrical generation systems, electrical
grids and other systems using legacy systems control systems such as Modbus and SNMP. Originally these
systems used RS 232, RS 422 and RS 488; these were “secure” because they were hardwired. This talk gives an
overview of current implementations of legacy protocols and hardware with a focus on cyber security aspects given
the new wireless additions to the legacy systems. Information Technology (IT) has intersected with Control
Technology (CT) in many industrial applications within the IAS scope.
The IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) requires significant merging of the IT and OT. This talk will look at the
ramifications of the merge and highlight some “hacker” attack techniques and tools. It gives an initial review of where
a process engineer or plant IT engineer should look.
