Title

The Professional Job Hunt: Practical Ideas Using LinkedIn and Other Tools

Speaker

John Swan, one of the organizers of PACE's new "Engineers in Transition" Task Force; plus a panel of recruiters and representatives from DBM, LinkedIn, Google

Abstract

Getting a new job can be tough - but we want IEEE's local members to be at the "front of the line" when it comes to getting job leads, interviews, and that new position! So "Engineers in Transition" ( http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2403879), a part of PACE, brings you actionable information on setting up your own LinkedIn pages, optimizing them for review by recruiters and hiring managers, and giving you concrete examples. We've been told that 3/4ths of recruiters will take a "quick look" at your LinkedIn page as part of their screening, and YOU want to be at the top of their listing of candidates that they pass along to the hiring manager.

John Swan has prepared a "guide" to optimizing a LinkedIn website. He'll walk through the key features and provide examples, showing how to use LinkedIn as a tool and make your profile look professional. If you already have a LinkedIn site, then bring a printout to share -- and get some guidance. If you DON'T have one, then this needs to be a priority for you. (You should also join our "Engineers in Transition" group, for timely discussions, news, networking and job postings.)

Following John's presentation, several recruiters will explain what they're looking for, and how their "systems" winnow down to the likely candidates. Ask them questions and learn first-hand what really works and what doesn't in finding a job, more information on educating yourself. You'll want to learn how they work, so you can anticipate their needs and put your best foot forward.

This seminar is free for currently registered IEEE Members. If your membership has lapsed, or you aren't yet a member, then the fee is $10. This seminar is co-sponsored by the SCV Education Society chapter.
