Title: Antenna Impedance Models

Speaker: Stephen D. Stearns, Northrop Grumman, Electromagnetic Systems Laboratory

Presentation Abstract:
Although modern EDA and circuit programs can work with tabulated impedance data directly, there remain situations where a tabulated representation isn't useful. In this talk we consider antenna impedance models and their uses. Published models for monopoles and dipoles are compared and new ones introduced. Models that are positive-real rational functions yield realizable equivalent circuits. A common textbook equivalent circuit for a monopole or dipole near resonance is shown to be the least accurate. However, two low-order equivalent circuits have been found that track the impedance through a complete revolution on the Smith chart, i.e. from d-c to well past the first resonance, and nearly the first antiresonance. More complicated "broadband" models that track antenna impedance through multiple resonances are also examined.

Speaker Biography:
Mr. Stearns has been with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (formerly TRW), Electromagnetic Systems Laboratory, in San Jose since 1990, where he is Senior Staff Engineer. Before that, he was Senior Scientist at Technology for Communications International for two years and Senior Member of the Technical Staff at GTE Government Systems Corporation in Mountain View for 14 years. He also worked at Probe Systems Inc. in Sunnyvale and Hughes Aircraft Company Ground Systems in Fullerton. He attended Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and California State University Fullerton where he studied electromagnetics under Prof. G.I. Cohn.?Mr. Stearns is a Senior Member of the IEEE, has over 50 publications and presentations, and holds seven U.S. patents for cochannel signal processing technology. He holds two federal FCC licenses:? Amateur Extra class and commercial General Radio Operator with Radar Endorsement, and he has held Novice, Technician, and 1st Class Radiotelephone licenses.?He writes a column on topics in electromagnetics and antennas, and serves as a reviewer for an IEEE Transactions journal.
