Upcoming Event

  • Nov 19 2009:  Our speaker is Asad Abidi (UCLA), and the topic of his presentation is  "Microelectronics and the Rise of High Technology:  A History of the US IC Design Industry"

Abstract

The real history of IC design is known vaguely, often only to the players and their friends. It is not taught at schools, nor is it readily accessible. It is almost certainly not known to the new generation of engineers.
Drawing from the literature, this talk will follow the rise of integrated circuit design from its origins in the military and aerospace to digital computers and microprocessors; and put into perspective the key events in the formation of the digital and analog IC design communities.

Biography

Asad Abidi (Fellow, IEEE) is Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA. He received his first degree in the UK, and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981, when analog CMOS IC design was at its peak revolutionizing the telecommunications industry. He worked at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ until 1985, where he participated in the first wave of high-speed analog and digital IC’s realized in submicron MOS. At UCLA, his group’s research has contributed to RF-CMOS maturing into a major component of today’s semiconductor industry.

Asad Abidi received the 2008 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
