Ernie Schaffer (Bio): As Electromagnetic
Engineering Manager at Whittaker Corporation Ernie Schaeffer was
responsible for the design of motors that operate aircraft valve
actuators and gyroscopes. During his seven year stint with Whittaker
Ernie had the opportunity to design a sophisticated motor for a
classified space program. His entrepreneurial spirit gave birth to a new
line for the company as more electromagnetic spacef light product
opportunities were offered. Then in late 1975 Whittaker management asked
Ernie to stop taking orders for these new products and to founded his
company in his garage. 32 years later he sold his company and retired.
In those 32 years his company’s products were flown to every planet
that NASA explored. His business expanded to support the early space
programs of Japan, China, France, Italy, and Spain. Along the way Ernie
managed to earn an MBA at Pepperdine University. His many honors include
the Engineers Council of San Fernando Valley recognition as
Distinguished Engineer and later as Engineer of the Year. Ernie was
awarded the Public Service Medal for his "Innovative design of
electric motors and actuators" in support of the NASA space
Program. And in 1990 Forbes Magazine included a feature article dealing
with his exploits in the space program. More recently he helped found
the Ernie Schaeffer Center for Entrepreneurism and Innovation at CSUN.
