Local Utah Earthquake Survey - IEEE Members invited to complete online survey

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) is a prominent nonprofit research organization.  The objective of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute is to reduce earthquake risk by (1) advancing the science and practice of earthquake engineering, (2) improving understanding of the impact of earthquakes on the physical, social, economic, political, and cultural environment, and (3) advocating comprehensive and realistic measures for reducing the harmful effects of earthquakes.

The link to find out more about EERI is: http://www.eeri.org/

EERI is conducting a research project to determine practical methods to cause seismic design and construction of building or facility contents (walls, ceilings, lighting, electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, piping, process equipment, specialty equipment specific to a facility’s use, HVAC equipment, ductwork, computer equipment, storage shelves or racks, facades, etc.; known collectively as nonstructural items) to be anchored or braced to resist earthquake loads in a manner which will provide for personnel safety and desired facility function.  (Refer to the April 2008 newsletter on the website for more information.) The survey is being done initially in Utah, California and Washington. This is not a technical survey related to code equations or design provisions; rather the survey seeks practical implementation suggestions.   Responses from IEEE's members would be important in understanding and improving the state of the practice with respect to earthquake bracing of electrical equipment, conduit and other systems.  Would it be possible for your members to be made aware of this opportunity in your newsletter, or through some other form of communication?  Please contact me to discuss this at your convenience.  Also, feel free for forward the link below to your membership.

The link to respond to the questionnaire is:

The questionnaire is menu driven and has been customized to focus on items relevant to the respondents field of expertise.  It will take about 15 to 30 minutes to complete depending upon the level of additional comments the respondent chooses to make. The response window is June 9, 2008 through July 21, 2008.

Your input is confidential and will not be tracked back to you or your email address.

Thank you,

John P. Masek, P.E., S.E.
