Abstract:
The Bold and the Brave investigates how women have strived throughout history to gain access to education and careers in science and engineering. Author Monique Frize, herself an engineer for over 40 years, introduces the reader to key concepts and debates that contextualize the obstacles women have faced and continue to face in the fields of science and engineering. She focuses on the history of women’s education in mathematics and science through the ages, from antiquity to the Enlightenment. While opportunities for women were often purposely limited, she reveals how many women found ways to explore science outside of formal education.

Abstract:
This workshop will provide a scientific forum to present and discuss development aspects of multimodal (video, voice and sound, RFID, perimeter intrusion, infrared, chemical, etc) intelligent sensor technologies for geographical location and socio-cultural context-aware security risk assessment and decision support in human-crowd surveillance applications. Contributions covering theoretical developments and practical applications, including but not limited to the following areas, are invited:
• algorithms for the integration of the heterogeneous information from the surveillance sensors into a coherent multimodal model of the human crowd behaviour;
• multi granularity-level feedback and human-computer interaction interfaces for the human users/agents who are the final threat assessors and decision makers in the specific security monitoring situation.
• image processing and computer-vision algorithms for tracking and recognition of relevant face and body-language patterns such as facial emotions, body gait and gestures of the humans in a crowd;
• the measurement and evaluation of the environmental parameters (background sound, ambient light, etc) that provide contextual information for specific surveillance task;
• multidisciplinary (human psychology, multicultural sociology, etc.) context-aware system for the real-time evaluation of threatening behavioural patterns of humans identified as potential security risk;

The conference will feature world-class plenary speakers, tutorials, and technical as well as application sessions. Paper submission details will be published shortly. Paper submission deadline: 15 February 2010
Thanks to hard work of Wahab Almuhtadi (past Section
Chair, and Communications Society Ottawa Chapter Chair), plus the
strong support of Telus, Ottawa Tourism, Ottawa Convention Centre,
and many many other local industry and academia supporters, the Ottawa
Section has won the right to host the prestigious International Conference
on Communications in 2012. It may seem so long away; however, this
effort has taken a year to get to this point and a lot of work is
yet to come. More detail will be provided on our website. In the next
few months, we will be looking forward to contacting those who have
already come forward to help.
The announcement was made on June 17, 2009, at the International
Conference on Communications (ICC) 2009 in Dresden, Germany. Ottawa
beat out other bidding major international cities. ICC 2012 will be
held at the Ottawa Convention Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from
June 10 till June 15, 2012. The estimated number of the conference
attendees will be 1500 to 2000. The conference will have a significant
impact in regaining the reputation and business of the Canadian telecom
and high tech companies that are facing many challenges during these
recent years, and would raise the profile and visibility of these
companies. As well as the conference will benefit the academia, scientific
and engineering research, industry and local business in Ottawa.
ICC2008 was held in Beijing, China http://www.ieee-icc.org/2008/.

Update on the state of WIE and TISP Ottawa News
WIE Update:
The Ottawa WIE website has been revamped and is now available at http://ieee.org/go/ottawa-wie. Please check our "Events" section to see what our executives have planned! As you renew your IEEE membership for next year, consider to add
WIE membership (only $25USD/year). Recent surveys indicated that over 25% of WIE membership is male. They responded that while they did not require directly services from WIE, they paid the dues in order to support the women in the profession and also the women in their lives who consider/will consider engineering as a career. So please consider to support. Reminder that WIE membership is free for students (undergrad and grad) as well as for Life Members so check WIE when you renew this year! Please contact for questions, comments, etc - Jennifer Ng, WIE Ottawa Chair

Collaborations
with other sections
Details: The IEEE Ottawa Section
has twinned with the IEEE Minneapolis MN Section.In the hope of building
stronger organizations, the executive of the two sections agreed to
communicate and share experiences, plus collaborate and cooperate
in future events. The agreement took place at the 2008 IEEE Sections
Congress held in Quebec City last month, where in informal discussions,
we found we were working on similar goals and activities such as in
engineering in medicine and biology, reliability, plus industry and
student outreach. The romance begins.
