About the IEEE
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) is a not-for-profit, technical professional association of more than 360,000 members in about 175 countries. ( 2003 Statistics ) The IEEE acronym is pronounced Eye-triple-E.

Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others.

Through its technical publishing, conferences and consensus-based standards activities, the IEEE produces 30 percent of the world's published literature in electrical engineering, computers and control technology, holds annually more than 300 major conferences and has nearly 900 active standards with 700 under development.

The IEEE includes about 40 technical societies to accomodate its diverse range of technical interests. Likewise, there are about 300 local Sections and over 1100 technical Chapters to accomodate local interests. Chapters are the technical component of Sections. A Joint Chapter in a Section, has ties to several related technical Societies.

IEEE Toronto Section is one of 20 Sections in Canada, where the national organization is known as IEEE Canada. IEEE Canada is one of the 10 geographic regions of IEEE worldwide.
