Abstract

With the new CSA Z462 standard and the upcoming ULC S801 document, many utilities are instituting policies to protect workers. Everyone is taking a different approach to interpretation of existing standards and industry practices. These practices include engineering policies such as purchasing arc resistant equipment and minimizing fuse clearing times; work task organization to minimize the exposure to live apparatus; calculation of exposure intensity, definitions of at-risk activities and exposure boundaries; guidelines for wearing arc flash PPE (personal protective equipment); and training material for field personnel. This talk discusses Hydro One’s ongoing progress in this area, focusing on the speaker’s particular contribution in the area of refining PPE categories, definition of at-risk actvities and definition of arc flash boundaries.

Biography

Jody Levine (B.A.Sc Waterloo 1991, M.A.Sc Waterloo 1999) spent 16 years with Ontario Hydro Research/Kinectrics performing a variety of High Voltage and High Current tests. During this time, she blew up a lot of equipment and witnessed testing of arc-rated PPE. She took a position with Hydro One in the Station Maintenance – Technical Services in 2007 where she is responsible for, among other things, grounding and distribution station metalclad, both of which lead to many questions about arc flash hazards related to metalclad switchgear. She became a member of Hydro One’s internal arc flash committee to find out what was being done, and discovered that there was a lot left to do. Jody is a Senior Member of IEEE, is active on the IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee (cable standards), and is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
